Trainer Tuesday: I’m All Twitchy

11/10/2009

Even though today is Trainer Tuesday, I have to go back to Sunday for the start of this post. Sunday, I ran 4.5 miles. That’s the farthest I’ve gone to date and I’m closing in on my 5-mile by Thanksgiving target. Sunday was too beautiful a day to not run. I set out to do a 4-mile run but felt strong when I got home so I kept going, just another half mile. I stayed at a manageable pace (about 11.30 minute miles) and never got winded or felt the need to walk. When I stopped, however, my legs felt like jello for a while. And then my right quad started to twitch. Nothing too obnoxious but it lasted most of the day.

Yesterday the twitch was gone, until… Monday night’s session with the AB KILLER, as trainer Jen is referred to on this blog. Trust me, she never disappoints.

In my core/medicine ball workouts, we do a lot of squat-type exercises as well as lots of balancing exercises on the squishy thing and the Bosu ball. I’m guessing these exercises irritated that quad muscle again because I’ve been twitchy ever since. I looked this up and saw that lack of sleep or hydration can be the culprit. So I got plenty of sleep last night and made sure to drink LOTS of water, even more than usual. Still twitching. I’m sure it’s just from the types of exercises we were doing and will subside on its own in its own good time.

Speaking of exercises, weirdest exercise of the night last night? I like to call them Crawl on the Ball. I like to come up with m own names for the torture devices equipment and exercises we do. It makes them more fun. So here’s how Crawl on the Ball works:

Lay on the Yoga/Stability Ball with hips/abdomen on the ball, legs out behind and hands on the floor (in a plank/push-up position). Draw knees into chest rolling the ball toward your head and then extend legs back out flat to starting position, all the while trying to keep the ball from rolling out from underneath you. Repeat. Not easy and Holy Mother of …,  do you feel that one.

Oh, and thanks Danielle, who on my last post, offered up an exercise the Ab Killer hadn’t hit me with yet. We did that one last night too. Geez! No more suggestions, ok? She’s got enough in her arsenal!

I am proud to say, as we were finishing up last night, I did remind Jen that I hadn’t done my Yoga Ball push-ups as of yet, and I cranked out 20 of those before leaving! I also hit the 5 mark with the elbows-on-knees sit-ups, even if number 5 was questionable.

Other than the twitchy leg, I feel good today. Sore as in I know I did stuff last night, but not too sore. It’s getting better every week. Thanks Jen!

Live on Long Island? Interested in training with the Ab Killer? Or maybe you just have a suggestion on how she can torture me further? You can find her at activpersonaltraining.com. Her real name is Jen.

I read this blog and broke out into a cold sweat. I start to train w/ Jen this Thursday’s morning and I hope she doesn’t mistaken me for you.
It sounds like I will be working from my hospital bed on Friday. I am looking forward to it(really!) and congrats on running 4/5 miles!
