Navigating the January Gym Craze

12/29/2009

Feet on treadmillsI don’t make New Year’s resolutions. I resolved a long time ago that making those resolutions would just end in a blazing spiral of disappointment the minute I slid off my resolve. And we all slide off of our resolve now and again. But lots of other people do make New Year’ s resolutions. And some even stick to them.

Everyone else’s New Year’s resolutions, however, signal a lifestyle change for me. In the past month, I’ve been getting to the gym when I can. Sometimes, in the morning. Sometimes after work. Sometimes at 2:00 in the afternoon on Saturday. It didn’t really matter when I went to the gym because in the past couple of months, whenever I would get there, there would be equipment available.  It’s been sweet.

If last year was any indication, however, and I’m sure it is, that will all change on Saturday. My first after-work visit to the gym after the New Year last year, I found myself waiting for a treadmill or any other type of workout equipment. I went home. And then back the next day at 5:45 am. While even the mornings will be more crowded for a month or so, I will still be able to jump on a treadmill, a bike or into the pool without having to race someone to the machine or wait for an open swim lane.

And while I really prefer to stay in my warm, cozy bed in the morning, I also prefer a stress-free workout. It just starts the day off right.

So starting next week, I’ll be getting up before the crack of dawn and dragging my sleepy butt to the gym for my wake-up call. It’s a good thing. Not only do I guarantee my workout that way, I get to start my day knowing I’ve already done something for myself.

With race season just a mere four months away, it’s time to get back on a training schedule. And while  I don’t set resolutions, I do set goals, and I have a busy race season planned for next year. I’ll be doing my first open-water swims and an olympic distance race!

April 24th – Mini Mightyman Sprint Triathlon

June 6 -Great South Bay Sprint Triathlon

July 11, Mighty North Fork Sprint Triathlon

And since it doesn’t look like Trek Women will be hosted in NY again next year, I’m thinking I’ll bite the bullet and Sept. 12 I’ll race in the Mighty Hamptons Olympic Distance Triathlon to finish the season!

For more info on these races, go to eventpowerli.com

I’m also looking for a half marathon sometime in the fall in the NY area. If you know of one, let me know! Thanks.

Happy New Year!

I like the home workout and meal thoughts on this channel. But, I reckon most people over exaggerate in regards to how busy they are. If you have time to surf the net you have time to get off your butt and exercise. We make time for what is vital to us.
