The temperature gauge read 16 degrees in my car this morning. The howling 30-mile-an-hour wind gusts made it feel more like 4 degrees. I had planned to go to the gym this morning to get a run in, but when I heard that wind? I opted to stay in bed. I’ll go to the gym tomorrow when it’s at least light out. Somehow the bright sun makes it look a little warmer outside.
I take my daughter to work in the morning and then come home and get myself ready and out the door. In between, this morning, I stopped at Walmart to pick up gloves. Can’t find mine and my hands were cold. While I was there, I also grabbed a knit headband for around my ears… I suppose just in case I decide to brave an outdoor run? I’ve also found myself considering what layers I would wear if I were to run outside… I miss running outside.
However, I’m not a fan of winter and I have no use for cold weather, especially this really cold weather. Why I never moved off Long Island is beyond me.
On my way to work this morning, I saw two dedicated souls “Running Against the Wind,” literally. I don’t know if that will ever be me, but I felt a little pang of jealousy that I wasn’t out there too. And then my rational brain took over and I realized that they were the crazy ones.
I mean I like running in 50-degree weather. I can even handle 40 degrees. Once the mercury dips below that though? I head inside. But I miss outside. One of my favorite things about running was being out in the sun, in the fresh air.
If the wind dies down, who knows? Maybe I’ll bundle up and go for my run outside tomorrow. Maybe I’ll even like it!
On another note, in Australia, where it’s summer, Shannon is competing in her first triathlon on Sunday! She said this blog inspired her. Really, did I make it sound like fun? (Actually, it is fun.)
If you think of it, give Shannon some tri love in comments today!
Shannon, we wish you the best on Sunday! We know you’ll do fabulous!

When I was on my way to the gym this morning it was 18 degrees. BRR! They are calling for snow here Sat but I am determined no matter what to run outside Sunday- 7.5 on a treadmill would be even worse than the cold!
I will never understand why you haven’t moved off LI yet either. Here in Shreveport, LA it is a stifling hot 38 degrees. But it’s already pretty much spring down here. I have been anxious to get to running outside, but I have been lazy lately, so I stopped by for a little inspiration. Thank you for all of your hard work and inspiration.
Why don’t you layer up and give winter runnin a try? You might be surprised at how much you enjoy it!
Woo hoo! You’re right, it IS fun!!
Had a blast doing my tri. It was hot and veeeery windy on the day, but I still managed to complete it under my goal time and didn’t fall in too much of a heap when it was all over. I think I’m hooked!
Best-
Shannon
