Sunday Running

02/28/2010

I am in trade magazine publishing. Which means deadlines. Lots of them. Our industry’s biggest trade show of the year is just around the corner, which means crazy deadlines. Lots of them. Crazy deadlines means long hours at the office and more hours in front of the computer at home getting work done that I just can’t find the time to get done at the office. Right now, writing this post, I’m taking a break from a story that keeps writing itself into a corner. Anyhow, the crazy deadlines and work hours have kept me from blogging as much as I would like. I have posts piling up in my head like crazy, so be ready after next week, when the work insanity should subside. I haven’t had much time for exercising either, other than abs in the living room when I grab 20 free minutes. The gym? Not...

Turning The Corner

02/21/2010

Yesterday,  it started out cold and since I had breakfast planned with friends in the morning, I decided I would go for an outdoor run in the afternoon when it was warmer. It hit 45 degrees yesterday here…practically summer. However, it was really windy all day so I managed to find other stuff to do and never did make it out for a run. The only thing I like less than running in the cold is running in the windy cold. Today though… feeling guilty about not running yesterday, I was determined. I got up, got layered and got out the door by 8:30. It was in the mid-30s I think, but not too windy. And when I woke up, the sun was shining and the birds were chirping. Sure signs of spring. Still a foot of snow on the ground but the roads were clear, so whatever. It...

Spring is coming…I can feel it

Spring is coming…I can feel it

Today was windy and cold. But the sun was shining and the sky was bright blue. And the air was soft. I don’t know how else to describe it. There was a gentleness to the air when the wind wasn’t whipping. It wasn’t the biting cold we’ve had in recent weeks. And when I left work tonight at 5:30, there was still a little bit of daylight. Spring is coming. The calendar says so, and today I could just feel it in the air. It lifted my spirits. Until today, I wasn’t holding out much hope that winter would ever end. I have two weeks of crazy deadlines and ridiculous amounts of work ahead of me. We have our big push before the biggest show in our industry, so there’s lots of writing and editing to do. I won’t see much daylight I’m afraid in the next two weeks....

My Motivation Is Missing

02/16/2010

I’m not sure what happened to my motivation. Just a few months ago, I thought nothing of getting up before the sun to go to the gym or out for a run. Just a few months ago, you couldn’t have thrown me off my weight loss plan. Just a few months ago, the highlight of my day was heading out the door for a run or a bike ride. Now, the only thing that gets me to the gym is guilt. I train with the ab killer because, well, secretly?, I’m afraid of her. Nah, not really. And the food thing, let’s not even talk about how I spend most of my days dreaming of chocolate– lots of chocolate. The only thing that keeps from diving in is that if I gain weight back I won’t have any clothes that fit. I gave the old clothes away. Maybe it’s...

Today, Fat Girl Is Winning

02/14/2010

Sometimes lately, I think this blog should be called Fat Girl vs. Fit Girl. This being fit thing can certainly feel like a championship fight some days. Today is one of those days. In fact, this has just been one of those weekends. As Fit Girl, over the last week, I’ve been assessing what I eat and trying to incorporate better choices and get rid of some of the empty calories I consume. I could live on 100-calorie snack packs, and since the beginning, I definitely consumed more of those than I should. Weight Watchers is great for portion control, and while I lost weight, I was still not making the best choices from a nutrition perspective a lot of the time. When my weight loss stalled 6 months ago, any amount of climbing back on the Weight Watchers points wagon has been to no avail, I’m suspecting because...

Snow…and a lot of it

Snow…and a lot of it

I’m ready for spring. We’re under a blizzard warning today in the NY area, with up to 14 inches of snow expected. Granted, it’s not what the Maryland area has been dealing with, but it’s still a lot of messy wet stuff that makes driving, or walking, no fun. I’m not a skier or any other type of cold-weather sports fan, so I have very little use for the white stuff. Even the snow day we have from work is really more trouble than its worth. We have a Friday deadline that has to be met whether we are in the office or not today. More than the inconvenience though, snow has always been a signal to eat. I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s because I’m housebound. Maybe it goes back to some childhood tradition. When we were kids, my mom baked…a lot. Really good stuff. A snowy day...

And We’re Off…

02/01/2010

I signed up for my first triathlon of the season last night and I think I have officially nailed down the rest of my race schedule. Maybe now that I know what I’m in for, I’ll get my butt out of bed bright and early in the morning. I’m looking forward to the days when the sun is up and all I have to do is roll out of bed, throw on my sneakers and run out the door. I’m starting off easy, with a race I’ve done before. The Mini Mightyman was the first race I attempted last year in April, although then it was turned into a duathlon at the last minute. It ended up still being my first tri, when I did it again in August. In August it was tough. In April, I intend to have a great race, since I know the course and...
