And We’re Off…

02/01/2010

I signed up for my first triathlon of the season last night and I think I have officially nailed down the rest of my race schedule. Maybe now that I know what I’m in for, I’ll get my butt out of bed bright and early in the morning. I’m looking forward to the days when the sun is up and all I have to do is roll out of bed, throw on my sneakers and run out the door.

I’m starting off easy, with a race I’ve done before. The Mini Mightyman was the first race I attempted last year in April, although then it was turned into a duathlon at the last minute. It ended up still being my first tri, when I did it again in August. In August it was tough. In April, I intend to have a great race, since I know the course and know now what to expect.

The Mini Mightyman is a 400-meter pool swim, 6-mile bike, 2-mile run. The perfect starter race or warm-up race.

From there, my race schedule gets a little more ambitious:

June 6 – Town of Islip Great South Bay Sprint Triathlon (750-meter swim, 11-mile bike, 5K run)

July 11 – Mighty North Fork Sprint Triathlon (500-meter swim, 8-mile bike, 3.5 mile run)

Sept. 12 -  (the biggie) Mighty Hamptons Olympic Distance Triathlon (.93-mile swim, 23.8 mile bike, 6.2 mile run).

For more info on the above races, check out  eventpowerli.com.

I’d like to end the season with a half marathon in the Hamptons on Oct. 2.  I’m also considering a half marathon in May, but I don’t know that I’ll be ready for that one. I guess I’d be ready for it if I sign up for it.

And there’s always Trek Women. They won’t be in NY this year, but if they are close enough in Connecticut in August, I may make the trip since I can do that one for free.

So why am I putting my race schedule in writing in February, when it doesn’t start for another two and a half months?

Because if I write it down, I’ll make it happen. And I really want this race season to happen.

I’m gonna need a wetsuit. And a better bike.

Oh and I’m doing two of these races with my triathlete brother, and maybe one with my sister too. That’s very exciting. Even though Triathlete brother will finish way, way ahead of me.

Looks like a lot of fun races for you. I post a workout update every month and in it are the races I’ve signed in for. Like you, writing it down helps me to realize I need to keep on training.

Have fun at training for these events.

I have been reading your blog for inspiration!! I signed up for the Mother’s Day duathlon (Carl Hart) when I read about it here. I had already committed to the Mighty North Fork Sprint…my friends talked me into it. Thanks for inspiring me and I look forward to reading more about your races.

I’d love to catch up with you at Mighty North Fork! I’ll be at that one too. Good luck at the Carl Hart duathlon. I’ve been contemplating doing one of those too. My first race last year ended up being a duathlon. It was fun!

I heard Event Power is gonna do a sprint race on August 8th at Smith Point County Park. I hear it’s very hush, hush right now. Have you heard anything? How cool would it be to have a sprint that ends at the beach!?
