A for Effort?

03/30/2010
A for Effort?

I have been really sticking to my workout regimen these past two weeks. After a less than spectacular exercise winter, I’ve gotten back on track, running, swimming, biking, I’m doing it. When I can. Last night I had a biking on the trainer night planned because, well,  it’s been raining here and I might have drowned if I tried doing anything outside. Yes, it rained that hard. 9 inches in two days. All I can say is thank goodness it’s not snow. Back to bike training…. When I got home from work, I really wasn’t in the mood so I thought I would make it my day off and I got in my pj’s. Ten minutes later, however, guilt kicked in, and I changed into workout gear, kicked that bike’s butt for 30 minutes, all while watching out for the kitty, who was intrigued at how my feet were...

Evening Runs Suck

03/24/2010

I am so glad that triathlons are in the morning. If they were in the afternoon, I don’t think I’d ever finish even one leg. I’ve learned about myself since I started working out that I am a morning person when it comes to exercise. Unfortunately, mornings aren’t always convenient. Take today for example. I had a run planned for this morning but my alarm didn’t go off and I overslept. So since it was nice out and light out when I got home from work, I went out for my run then. Before my run, and after work, I stopped at the bank, the grocery store and the gas station…. I’m just sayin. I felt pretty good when I headed out the door. I’ve been really good about working out these past two weeks; yesterday I swam in the morning and biked on the trainer last night. Double...

Five weeks and counting

03/21/2010

My first tri of the season is five weeks from yesterday. And I’m ready to jump back into training full force to have a good race. This first race, EventPower’s Mini Mightyman (400-meter pool swim, 6-mile bike, 2-mile run) is the perfect race for starting the season, especially since I am still such a newbie. This morning I went out for a 3-mile run, and after last week’s runs, which were more walk/runs because of my knee, I’m happy to report that I ran the whole three miles in 37 minutes and felt good and strong. My breathing was steady, my legs felt good for most of the run and my knees behaved like there was never anything wrong. It was great. Tomorrow is a swim day, and I will start biking again this week too. Biking is still my least favorite part of training, but it has to...

Up, Up and… Down: Hitting the Hills

03/20/2010

On Saturday mornings, I can sleep in. I don’t have to go to work. It’s nice. Sleeping in for me generally only means sleeping until 8:00 or maybe 8:30, but it’s still better than 6:45, or if I get up for the gym on a workday, 6:00. However, this morning I didn’t sleep in. I set my alarm for 6:25 am, so I could get up and go walk hills with trainer Jen. She walks hills every Saturday and Sunday morning, because, well, she wouldn’t have a walking route without them; her neighborhood is just that hilly.  Her neighborhood’s hills make the hills I normally run look like ant hills. The hills in Jen’s neighborhood are hills I used to take my kids for rides on when they were little because it would give them butterflies in their tummies, kind of like a rollercoaster. Yes, these are hills. I...

Fair Weather Running

03/18/2010

It was such a beautiful day here yesterday that when I got home from work, I decided to go for a walk. I figured my knee wasn’t going to let me run, but it would be good to get out in the fresh air for a little while. So I threw on my t-shirt, sweatshirt, iPod and sneakers and headed out. I walked the first quarter mile, like I always do, felt good and decided to give running a try, fully expecting my knee to lock up within a hundred yards as it has every other time I’ve tried. But it didn’t, and I kept going. Hurray! Having not run at all in three weeks, my lungs weren’t any too happy with me, but my legs felt strong. I kept the pace steady and slow and took short walking breaks if I felt the slightest twinge in my knee...

It’s All in the Attitude

03/17/2010

On my way to work this morning, as I was grumbling out the door because I just didn’t want to go, I realized I’ve had a very negative attitude lately…. about everything. Work has been beyond stressful, as it always gets at this time of year, my leg still hurts and I can’t run, and my eating? Well, I’ve kind of had a bad attitude there too. I’ve been frustrated with my weight, and instead of being patient and making the right adjustments, I’ve been letting my frustration get the better of me. I don’t have a very long ride to work— a positive, right?— but during the short time I was in my car, I’ve decided it’s time to change the attitude and focus on those positives. Positives like some of the good eating habits I’ve managed to maintain. Positives like while I can’t run right now, there...

The Vicious Circle

03/12/2010

I understand now how so many of us end up gaining our weight back no matter how hard we try to keep it off. It’s the vicious circle. This circle starts out sweet. We start eating right and getting some exercise… our bodies respond by losing weight and toning up. And we feel great! And we keep going until we’ve lost as much weight as our bodies allow before hitting a plateau. Then the frustration sets in. Maybe we let more food creep back in than we should. Maybe we let our guards down just a little. We get a little lazy and stop tracking, just for a couple of days. But then it’s tough to get back to tracking all the time, so we try a new approach. For me, it was more nutritious eating, but somewhere along the line, I’m eating too much of something I shouldn’t...

I’m Back… And Hurt

03/08/2010

I was released from the chains at my desk at the job on Friday at around 4:50 pm. Hurray! We finished our huge issues, and I was able to step away from the computer. It seemed endless, but it finally did end. I used the weekend to regroup and get reacquainted with my family. Then yesterday, as has been my tradition the past couple of weeks, I went for my Sunday run. Well I tried to go for my Sunday run. It was beautiful here yesterday afternoon, 50s, sunny, a bit windy. I was so happy to be outside I started out a bit too fast, quickly got winded (didn’t help that I was running against the wind), slowed to a walk for about a minute to re-pace myself and started to  run again. Ouch. Left knee locked. That’s never happened before…. Kept running, thinking it would loosen up,...
