It was such a beautiful day here yesterday that when I got home from work, I decided to go for a walk. I figured my knee wasn’t going to let me run, but it would be good to get out in the fresh air for a little while. So I threw on my t-shirt, sweatshirt, iPod and sneakers and headed out. I walked the first quarter mile, like I always do, felt good and decided to give running a try, fully expecting my knee to lock up within a hundred yards as it has every other time I’ve tried. But it didn’t, and I kept going.
Hurray! Having not run at all in three weeks, my lungs weren’t any too happy with me, but my legs felt strong. I kept the pace steady and slow and took short walking breaks if I felt the slightest twinge in my knee but overall I ran about 2 miles of a 2.5 mile course. With a little more than a month to go before my first race, it’s good to know I’ll be able to train the running part again, since that’s still the hardest for me.
The best part? About a mile in, I actually got hot and had to take off my sweatshirt and tie it around my waist. I ran most of the way in a T-shirt! That’s right, short sleeves! There was a point in February where I didn’t know if I would ever run outside again, much less in a T-shirt. Thank goodness for changing seasons. It felt fabulous.
Before I know it, I’ll be complaining about the humidity. But after being confined to the treadmill all winter, I don’t think I’ll be complaining quite as much.
Bring on Spring! I’m more than ready, and I know I’m not alone.
