Ice, Ice Baby

I went to the doctor today about my hip. I’m cleared to run! On the treadmill for at least the next week, but that’s a start. I also have to go to physical therapy for some intense stretching but the problem with my hip is minor and running won’t make it worse. Won’t make it better either unless I start doing the physical therapy and “Ice, ice, ice,” as Dr. C. put it. I love this doctor. She is my husband’s back doctor and she took care of me when I hurt my shoulder. She’s an Ironman triathlete and she knows her stuff. It was worth waiting the extra week to go see her about this problem.

The tendons in my hip flexor are swelling, which she said, is common and really more just aggravating. Once I got into my rhythm running, my hip actually loosens up and feels pretty good. It’s after a run, and then sitting, where the pain kicks in. Hence, the ice. I start physical therapy on Monday and hopefully by the time race day rolls around (July 11), I’ll be good to go!

I have a lot of catching up to do from a training perspective, but I should be ok with three and a half weeks. I won’t be as trained as I would have liked but I will be trained enough to finish. The bike leg is short and the course is flat. This will be my first open-water swim too! That should be fun.

I’m headed to the gym tonight right after work to get some time in on the stationary bike and then hit the treadmill for a short run. I’ll take it easy this week, but by the end of next week, I hope to be somewhat back on track. I’ll keep you posted.

And I’ll be getting the frozen veggies ready. I’ve found the steamer bags make great ice packs. They form to the spot you need iced and they don’t get so cold that you can’t keep them against your skin. We have a mixed veggie bag in the freezer that never did get cooked, so it’s now my official hip ice pack!
