Actually right now it’s raining, and while it will still be hot here in the Northeast tomorrow, the weather gurus say the string of thunderstorms blowing across Long Island will bring in some nice, dry hot air for a change. Yay!
I’ve been avoiding running a lot lately because of the heat and humidity, but today I got tired of avoiding. I got up. I got dressed. I got outside. My sunglasses fogged up because my house is air conditioned and outside, well, it was sauna-like.
Not only was it 80 degrees with 90% humidity, there wasn’t a leaf moving. No air. None. I still moved forward. I went for a two-mile run with some walking thrown in.
It was not a fun run. It also wasn’t the worst run I’ve had.
The negatives? I needed to walk, quite a bit. I hadn’t been eating great, even with my new photo diet thing so I felt really heavy this morning, like my sneakers were stuck to the ground with gum. In the beginning of the run, my shorts kept riding up and I had to keep fixing them…really annoying! The air had that hanging garbage smell that only a hot, sticky, no breeze kind of day can bring. It was hot and sticky.
The positives? My iPod, which I had on shuffle, gave me some really fun running music; I only had to skip one song. There were even a couple of moments where the music outweighed the heavy air and I found my pace and enjoyed the running. It felt good to sweat. I think the sweat finally kept my shorts in place. There is this amazing garden at one of the houses on my run route. I look forward to passing it and it always amazes me. It was hot and sticky and I went running anyway. And I felt better for it all day.
My eating was so much better today too. When I’ve had a good workout, I tend to eat more healthfully. I don’t know if that’s a function of my body needing better nutrients or that I just don’t want to waste the effort. Whatever it is, I have to remember that my mind works like this. It will help me get back on track.
Over the next few weeks, I’ll be getting back to my “round” workouts with trainer Jen, and I’m going to stop finding excuses for not getting out on the road. I think it’s time to start training for that half marathon. Seriously.

You and me both Diane. Lately when I run its so hot and miserable and my legs are so heavy, it feels like I weigh 2000 pounds. I’ve been doing alot of walking with my runs lately. Figuring that something is a whole lot better than nothing. Hang in there. And dream of those cool fall breezes and the leaves turning beautiful colors of yellow, orange, and red. aaaahhhhh….
The heat is brutal- I have been exchanging running for walking quite a bit (hey, its something!). Tomorrow it is supposed to be 80 degrees at the START of my race. UGH!!!!!
