Is It Yogurt? Or Dessert In Disguise?

08/19/2010

Today, as a snack, I tried a new flavor from Yoplait’s Light Yogurt line: Black Forest Cake. I’m beginning to wonder if these little treats should really be classified as yogurt.

To be honest, this one was disappointing. It tasted like cherry yogurt. Not that I mind cherry yogurt, mind you, but I was expecting something a little more chocolatey considering the name. Maybe instead of cherry pieces, they could have filled the container with chocolate cake pieces. Now that would be like Black Forest Cake, and probably couldn’t be classified as yogurt in that case.

I know Greek yogurt is better for you, but I can’t wrap my tastebuds around it, even with strawberries or honey. And I’m not a fan of plain yogurt. But yogurts with names like Raspberry Cheesecake, Red Velvet Cake and Apple Turnover (Yoplait), how can you go wrong? Weight Watchers has also come out with some wonderful new flavors, like Apple Pie A La Mode and Blueberry Pie. Yum.

According to the packaging for these goodies, they are real yogurt, with cultures and everything. Both brands weigh in at 100 calories a serving, although you get more with Weight Watchers. And both slide in at 1 to 2 WW points. It’s like a little piece of heaven and it’s good for you. On the downside, these dessert yogurts pack a decent amount of sugar, so if you’re doing a low-sugar thing, these might not be the best yogurt choices.

And then there’s frozen yogurt. My fave right now is Edy’s Slow Churned Praline Crunch. Thank goodness, it comes in individual serving sizes at just 200 calories. I bought a half gallon only once. That was not such a good idea.

Here’s my thinking. I like dessert. I like sugar. I know, even though I eat much healthier now, I still eat too much sugar. These yogurts satisfy my sweet tooth.

And they are dairy. And they are reasonable calorie choices. And even though they may not be as good for me as say, plain Greek yogurt, I’ll eat them instead of a real piece of raspberry cheesecake or apple pie a la mode on most occasions.

So for me, dessert yogurts get two thumbs up.

What’s your favorite “healthy” indulgence?

A few months ago I switched the Greek yogurt and now that’s all I eat. Everything else is too packed with sugar and not healthy, in my opinion. I also now buy the plain or vanilla greek yogurt instead of the ones with fruit–even less sugar!

    Hey Diane,
I have been taking a lemon yogurt and mixing it w. grape nuts and it is filling – I hope it;s not too bad.
but my new thing is 85% dark chocolate – 2 squares – 110 calories and I find I eat it slower.
if Lindt’s would like to deliver a truck load of chocolates to my house, I would be cool with it. :-)

    hey,
I was eating that activia yogurt every day but then realized eating yogurt for what probably is a lactose problem is not going to work…
I got some email recently about banana’s and how they are some marvel fruit and I morning and night I have one (or a sliced apple) with a gob of peanut butter on each bite. Love pb. I don’t know about the calories in PB but you can’t beat it for protein. I just opened up an individual serving size of Hummus. they come in a box of like 16 at Costco. and again the calories in hummus might be higher than expected, but it’s good for you and more protein. granted I’m not as concerned with calorie count than just eating better, but it sure beats oreos (once a chubby adolescent, I see Oreos the way an alcoholic sees a bottle of gin.)
Anyway, everything in moderation. Ellen is a big “only eat the serving size” follower. that means 3 Oreos. but that’s it……

Frozen fruit with lots of whipped cream!!!!!

Even though fruit is good for you, it is loaded with sugar…and I eat a lot of it! However, I know it could be worst so I allow it!

For a yogurt I think 100 calories a serving is a lot. I use low fat yogurts with fruit flavors that have less calories.

My “healthy” indulgence is a little piece of very dark chocolate.
