Overriding the Lizard Brain

Overriding the Lizard Brain

There is a part of our brain, according to Seth Godin, that has the capacity to stop us from doing great things, or doing anything, for that matter. It’s the part of our brain that makes us afraid or unsure of ourselves. It’s the part of our brains that makes us cautious, afraid that if we push too hard or push at all, we’ll get hurt, we’ll fail, something bad will happen. I have to fight my lizard brain. Really. In everything I do. I especially find myself fighting with my lizard brain when I’m working out. And this morning was no exception. This morning though, I won. I had a 3.2 mile run planned this morning. I knew I needed to go. But my lizard brain wanted to hang around the house. My lizard brain kept trying to talk me out of stepping out the door. It gave...

Running with the Buses

Running with the Buses

It’s kinda like running with the bulls, only if you’re smart you run in the opposite direction of the buses so you don’t get creamed. My road is the bus route for the junior high and high school AND there’s an elementary school at the other end of the road. Many, many buses when school starts. And right at the time I go out running. It’s noisy. And Wednesday is recycling day — garbage trucks too! Today was my first morning run with the  buses. While I’m not a huge fan of the buses, I do like that it signals the beginning of the best running weather. It also signals the season where it’s important to pay really close attention to the traffic. Not just because of  the buses, but teachers and parents driving their kids to school too. It turns my quietish road into a main road for...

Getting Back on Track

09/08/2010

I go through periods where I write blog posts and then don’t like the way they sound when I read them back to myself, so I toss them. I can be prone to whining. Really, I can. There have been a string of those this summer. I started thinking about why my blog posts aren’t getting to my actual blog, and I realized it’s because over the last few months, I’ve lost my focus and I didn’t really want to admit that. I’ve become a bit of a slacker from a weight watching perspective, from an exercise perspective and I guess, as might be expected, from a blogging perspective. I haven’t been visiting my Twitter friends almost at all. I’ve come to count on this community to keep me rolling along, eating right, moving and staying on top of my healthy habits. I am so inspired by the stories...

Where Your Feet Can Take You

Where Your Feet Can Take You

I live on Long Island. It’s a big place with lots of beautiful beaches on the South Shore, cliffs on the North Shore, farms out east and, of course, lots of congested suburban neighborhoods. We spend most of our time in the congested neighborhoods. When my kids were small and even still today, one of my favorite pastimes has been to drive to the less congested areas and see what there is to see. And trust me, I thought I’d seen just about everything. Then I started walking and running. It’s amazing what you miss when you are in a car. I’m just sayin’. This weekend, my friend Jen and I went walking in an upscale neighborhood (an understatement). The neighborhood is probably one of the most upscale in central Suffolk County. The couple mile walk up the main road is spectacular. Million-dollar-plus homes with the Long Island Sound...

I Know What To Do

08/25/2010

This has been a summer of ups and downs, challenges and successes. Mostly challenges. Some of the challenges have been physical. Hurt hip. Cranky shoulders. Blistering heat. Raging hormones. Yes, I will admit,  I am at that later point in my life where the hormones all go wonky again for a while. More though, the challenges have been mental. I’ve had trouble staying on top of my food intake. Don’t get me wrong, I have good days. Heck, I have good weeks. Hence the successes. But I’ve had bad food days too. Very bad food days…and weeks. Where once there was discipline, there are now cravings that will just not be ignored. Where once it felt fabulous to know I’d gotten a substantial amount of nutrition in a reasonable number of calories, now it sometimes takes everything I have to not eat cookies all day long. Or Hershey’s Kisses....

Is It Yogurt? Or Dessert In Disguise?

Is It Yogurt? Or Dessert In Disguise?

Today, as a snack, I tried a new flavor from Yoplait’s Light Yogurt line: Black Forest Cake. I’m beginning to wonder if these little treats should really be classified as yogurt. To be honest, this one was disappointing. It tasted like cherry yogurt. Not that I mind cherry yogurt, mind you, but I was expecting something a little more chocolatey considering the name. Maybe instead of cherry pieces, they could have filled the container with chocolate cake pieces. Now that would be like Black Forest Cake, and probably couldn’t be classified as yogurt in that case. I know Greek yogurt is better for you, but I can’t wrap my tastebuds around it, even with strawberries or honey. And I’m not a fan of plain yogurt. But yogurts with names like Raspberry Cheesecake, Red Velvet Cake and Apple Turnover (Yoplait), how can you go wrong? Weight Watchers has also come...

Long Run Sunday

Long Run Sunday

On Facebook this morning, the first thing I saw was a note from the Run Like a Diva group asking if we’d done our long run yet this weekend. That got me out the door. I should have started long runs last week but I had a stomach bug and running was not on the agenda. In fact, I didn’t get out to run until Friday of this week when my stomach finally settled. On Friday when I went out (after more than a week of not running), I opted for a 2.5 miler. The weather was blissfully cool and humidity-free and the run was one of the strongest I’ve had all summer (no walking whatsoever). But it was only two and a half miles. No way I’m running a half marathon based on a strong 2.5 mile run. Today was my first long run. It’s been an up...

Recovering from Vacation Eating

Recovering from Vacation Eating

Last week was a vacation week of sorts for me. It started as a bona fide vacation. We went away for a couple of days for a family reunion. And then my sister was in town for the rest of the week, which had me visiting her around my work schedule. I have to admit, it was not a good food week. Not a great exercise week either. What rattled me most was how easy it was to slip out of good habits and back into bad habits so quickly and easily, all because it was a vacation week. Added to the family vacation was the departure of one of my co-workers this week. Between the two events, there were lunches out, dinners out, fast food and drinking. Now, it’s not like this is the first time I’ve gone out for meals since I started eating healthier two years...

I Love Running… I Hate Running… I Love Running…

I Love Running… I Hate Running… I Love Running…

This is a post I wrote last year around this time and reading back, I realized that it is really relevant to my life again now, so I’m re-running it. I’ve been on vacation this week and will be back to regular posting tomorrow. But this has always been one of my favorites! Recently, I came across a greeting card that on the front said: I love running, I hate running, I love running, I hate running. I loved that and if I could find it again, I would totally link you to it! I loved it, because as a newbie runner, it’s exactly the way I feel, when I’m running, when I’m about to start running, when I finish. It is totally a love/hate relationship, although lately, the pros definitely outweigh the cons. While I was running my 3.2 miles this morning (my version of a long run),...

Eye on the Prize: Long Island Diva’s Half Marathon

Eye on the Prize: Long Island Diva’s Half Marathon

Staying on track from a food perspective has been tricky these past few months. And I plan on getting that back in order just as soon as I can. Today will be a good day. Tomorrow will be a good day. Then I’ll have VACATION. This weekend I head off to a family reunion, where I can pretty much be guaranteed I will overeat and overdrink. But it will be loads of fun, and I’m not planning to limit myself too much for the couple of days I will be away. When we get home, that will be a different story. When we get home, I will be training for a half marathon that I found in my area that just looks like awesome fun. It’s called the Diva’s Half Marathon and you are greeted at the finish line with champagne and chocolate. Now if that’s not an incentive...
