Triathlon Here I Come

12/15/2008

Ok, so it’s official. Back when I decided it was time to get fit for my 50th birthday (and actually even way before that), I had always had the idea that I would participate in a triathlon. My brother is a triathlete, a good one, and he is in incredible shape. Coming from the same gene pool, I figure I can do this too. (oh sure.) So I signed up and the date of my very first triathlon will be April 18, 2009, just one month before the big birthday. It’s a starter triathlon (Mini Mighty Man) with a 400 meter swim, 6 mile bike and 2 mile run. However, coming from my state of years of no exercise, this will be a challenge. I started preparing when I started weight watchers in July, with walking. Now I’m at the gym swimming, biking and trying to run (this will...

Tough Week In WW Land

11/23/2008

I started at the gym last week, and I was really excited by how much I was able to do. I also ate really well all week. Stayed right on program, tracked everything I put in my mouth and even went under points on a couple of days….all while working out 4 days in a row. And then I weighed in on Thursday. Nothing. Not one ounce. I stayed the same. Sigh. And Thanksgiving is coming up. Double sigh. In my head, I know it will come off, this week, next week (well maybe not next week) but it will come off. Getting on that scale though and not seeing it budge? No matter what my head knows, that’s so frustrating and somewhat defeating. I don’t mind when the scale stays the same or goes up if there’s a reason, but this was tough. And I know, it could...

I Joined the Gym

11/17/2008

So I did it. On Monday last week I joined a gym. It was something I was trying to avoid because I’ve never been a gym person, but it’s dark out now and I haven’t been able to get my walking in. And besides, I have a big fitness goal for April that would be almost impossible to meet without a pool. So I joined a gym with a pool. I finally went to the gym for the first time on Saturday (and then again yesterday!). Surprisingly I enjoyed it. I found that it’s easier to run on a treadmill right now than the street (I’m still mostly walking and then running a half lap every half mile or so). And I went swimming. I’ve always been a strong swimmer, having spent my youth at beaches, my teen years as a competitive swimmer and then as a lifeguard through...

Walking In The Rain

09/29/2008

I enjoy walking outside. I’d never go as far as I do if I was trying to do it on a treadmill. So where I live, it was very rainy this weekend, not great for walking long distances. Yesterday morning when I got ready to go though, the rain had stopped and I thought I could get in at least two miles before it started again. I was wrong. I was probably just about as far away from my house as I could be on a two-mile walk when the rain started, and by the time I was three quarters of the way, it was pouring. I tucked my ipod into my shirt and kept going because there was nothing else I could do. Fortunately for me, I have a good hubby who came looking for me. He picked me up when I had about a quarter of a...

Broke the 10-pound mark on Weight Watchers – WooHoo!

Broke the 10-pound mark on Weight Watchers – WooHoo!

My daughter and I had weigh-in tonight for Weight Watchers. Last week, I vowed to kick that .6 gain to the curb and boy did I… the .6 gain and a couple of its cousins. I had a 3.4 pound weight loss this week bringing my total to 11 pounds. My daughter (she’s 22) has lost another 1.4 pounds too, bringing her total to 8.8 pounds. We’re very excited for ourselves and each other. All this, and we’re eating the things we love and really having fun. After weigh-in tonight, Kate had Taco Bell and I had a huge piece of Sicilian pizza. We’re learning that we can still have whatever we want as long as we manage the rest our food intake carefully. I watch all these Jenny Craig and Nutrisystem commercials and while that may work for some, I’m not a huge fan of being tied to...

Keeping the Momentum Going

06/01/2008

While I know I’ve only just begun my “fit” routine, this was a tough week to get anything accomplished. Between rainy mornings (I’ve been walking outside) , a crazy schedule and not sleeping well at night and therefore, not being about to get out of bed in the morning, I only walked 3 times this week.  Now I know this is better than nothing, but it is certainly less than what I’d hoped to accomplish. Plus, the walks just didn’t feel fun. Plus, while I have been adding more fruit and veggies to my diet, I am still eating too much of the wrong things. I’m a stress eater, and there’s been a bit of stress lately. It’s amazing to me too. I feel so good when I’m walking regularly and eating right. You’d think that would be enough to keep going. It’s just so much easier to get...
