A Year Ago Today

A Year Ago Today

A year ago today, I was in my very first race. It was a triathlon turned duathlon due to pool problems. A year ago, I got up early in the morning and ran (sort of) 1 mile, biked 6 miles and ran (sort of) 1 mile. It was a tough race because I’d never done anything like that before. If you would have told me a year before that that I would ever have been running, much less in a multisport competition, I would have looked at you like you were nuts. It wasn’t something I ever expected to do, until I decided to do it. Deciding to become a triathlete was the very best decision I have ever made for myself. I’m not a great one. I’m not even a good one. I come in at the back of the pack. I can’t always run the full distance....

Two Years and 200 Posts! What I’ve Learned (Sort Of)

04/12/2010

It has been 199 posts since I  began blogging in May of 2008 and then seriously in July of 2008 in an attempt to chronicle my transition from “fat girl” to “fit girl.” I can honestly tell you, that writing this blog and the people I’ve met along the journey who have supported me have been key to any success I’ve had. And I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Blogging has kept me accountable, given me an outlet for my frustrations and a place to share the positive changes I have made since I turned 49. In a month I’ll be 51. The blog started as a tool to help me reach my goal of losing 50 pounds by my 50th birthday (met!) and going from a sedentary blob to triathlete (met!). I had never run a day in my life, and while I was athletic...

“Toe”- Ture

04/06/2010

I was late for an appointment this morning and running around my house trying to get ready. I had a couple of glitches, like ironed pants that were ripped– how? I don’t know. After drying my hair, I darted through the dining room where I actually don’t have a dining room table. Right now, my dining room is home to my bike and bike trainer. Any idea where this is going? If you guessed “stubbed toe on the bike trainer,” you guessed right. But I didn’t just stub my toe; I slammed my pinky toe into the trainer leg. The bike trainer did not budge, not even a fraction of an inch. My poor little toe took all the force. It was one of those “tears to the eyes” toe stubs, where you’re not really crying but the pain makes your eyes water. My first thought? I did not...

Running Backwards: Changing Course

04/04/2010

No I wasn’t literally running backwards,  although I understand that’s good exercise. This morning, however, when I went for my run, I had a 3.2 miler planned. Considering all the walking I’ve wanted to do during my runs, I decided to try something a little different. So when I headed out this morning, I took my route backwards. I’ve resisted this before because there’s one really good-sized hill on the route and I prefer to take that downhill rather than uphill (for obvious reasons). Since I’ve been walking even bigger hills, I figured I could handle this hill this morning, even though it put the hill toward the end of my run, so I was worried about being tired when I got there. But I didn’ t get tired. In fact, I felt great going up this hill. Really strong. Sometimes on my runs, the later miles are better...

Just Keep Running

Just Keep Running

“Just keep running…” Lately, that is my mantra when I am running. Ever since I took a couple of weeks to let my knee recover, I’ve been struggling to just run. I want to walk. My brain fights with my legs. Intellectually, I know in most cases, I can just keep running and get through the dips, and I’ll be fine. But I’ve been letting my brain get in the way. Not a whole lot, but I’ve been slowing to a walk at least once in my runs lately. Since  I know I can run these distances, the walking thing just won’t do. So today we got out early from work, and I decided to take a nice early afternoon run. Perfect weather, empty streets, I was determined that I was going to run this one. Through the run, when I felt like walking, I slowed my running pace...

A for Effort?

A for Effort?

I have been really sticking to my workout regimen these past two weeks. After a less than spectacular exercise winter, I’ve gotten back on track, running, swimming, biking, I’m doing it. When I can. Last night I had a biking on the trainer night planned because, well,  it’s been raining here and I might have drowned if I tried doing anything outside. Yes, it rained that hard. 9 inches in two days. All I can say is thank goodness it’s not snow. Back to bike training…. When I got home from work, I really wasn’t in the mood so I thought I would make it my day off and I got in my pj’s. Ten minutes later, however, guilt kicked in, and I changed into workout gear, kicked that bike’s butt for 30 minutes, all while watching out for the kitty, who was intrigued at how my feet were...

Evening Runs Suck

03/24/2010

I am so glad that triathlons are in the morning. If they were in the afternoon, I don’t think I’d ever finish even one leg. I’ve learned about myself since I started working out that I am a morning person when it comes to exercise. Unfortunately, mornings aren’t always convenient. Take today for example. I had a run planned for this morning but my alarm didn’t go off and I overslept. So since it was nice out and light out when I got home from work, I went out for my run then. Before my run, and after work, I stopped at the bank, the grocery store and the gas station…. I’m just sayin. I felt pretty good when I headed out the door. I’ve been really good about working out these past two weeks; yesterday I swam in the morning and biked on the trainer last night. Double...

Five weeks and counting

03/21/2010

My first tri of the season is five weeks from yesterday. And I’m ready to jump back into training full force to have a good race. This first race, EventPower’s Mini Mightyman (400-meter pool swim, 6-mile bike, 2-mile run) is the perfect race for starting the season, especially since I am still such a newbie. This morning I went out for a 3-mile run, and after last week’s runs, which were more walk/runs because of my knee, I’m happy to report that I ran the whole three miles in 37 minutes and felt good and strong. My breathing was steady, my legs felt good for most of the run and my knees behaved like there was never anything wrong. It was great. Tomorrow is a swim day, and I will start biking again this week too. Biking is still my least favorite part of training, but it has to...

Up, Up and… Down: Hitting the Hills

03/20/2010

On Saturday mornings, I can sleep in. I don’t have to go to work. It’s nice. Sleeping in for me generally only means sleeping until 8:00 or maybe 8:30, but it’s still better than 6:45, or if I get up for the gym on a workday, 6:00. However, this morning I didn’t sleep in. I set my alarm for 6:25 am, so I could get up and go walk hills with trainer Jen. She walks hills every Saturday and Sunday morning, because, well, she wouldn’t have a walking route without them; her neighborhood is just that hilly.  Her neighborhood’s hills make the hills I normally run look like ant hills. The hills in Jen’s neighborhood are hills I used to take my kids for rides on when they were little because it would give them butterflies in their tummies, kind of like a rollercoaster. Yes, these are hills. I...

Fair Weather Running

03/18/2010

It was such a beautiful day here yesterday that when I got home from work, I decided to go for a walk. I figured my knee wasn’t going to let me run, but it would be good to get out in the fresh air for a little while. So I threw on my t-shirt, sweatshirt, iPod and sneakers and headed out. I walked the first quarter mile, like I always do, felt good and decided to give running a try, fully expecting my knee to lock up within a hundred yards as it has every other time I’ve tried. But it didn’t, and I kept going. Hurray! Having not run at all in three weeks, my lungs weren’t any too happy with me, but my legs felt strong. I kept the pace steady and slow and took short walking breaks if I felt the slightest twinge in my knee...
