Running

I DID IT!

06/03/2009

This morning I woke up at 6:00 am to a thunderstorm. Darn…And I was planning to run outside. I figured I’d be running on the treadmill at the gym and then going swimming. I’m off from work today, so I decided to  work out after I dropped my daughter off at work, around 8:15. By that time, the skies had cleared and didn’t look too ominous anymore so I threw on my workout stuff, sneakers, iPod and sunglasses and headed outside for my run. There were still clouds but they didn’t look too threatening. I had decided that today I would push for a full run without walking. And I DID IT! I walked the first quarter mile to warm up and then started running…and never stopped until I got back to my house, a full 2.25 miles running, me… running the whole way, no walking. It’s a shock,...

My New Running Shoes – Asics Gel Kahana3

My New Running Shoes – Asics Gel Kahana3

I learned something this week. Different feet need different running shoes. Before now, I never researched my sneakers. I just went to the store, found something that felt comfortable and looked cool. My first serious training sneakers when I started walking back in July of 2008 were New Balance 560s. Good running shoes but apparently not for my feet.  And I’ve been walking/running in them for almost a year. I can hear all of the gasps out there from more experienced runners. The same sneakers for almost a year? I also found out recently that you aren’t supposed to keep running shoes for more than 6 months or for more than 500 miles… kind of like an oil change. Learn something new every day. Anyway, yesterday I went for new sneakers and I even did some research first. I learned that there are three types of feet and different...

Slowing Down

05/24/2009

I’ve been frustrated with my running lately. That could be because I’m now running on the road and it feels like a setback from the treadmill, where I had really made some substantial progress. I know it’s not a setback, but not being able to run as far as I can on the treadmill without walking feels like a step backwards. I realized that one of the reasons for this though is pacing. On the treadmill, the speed is set, the treadmill moves and so do I… at about an 11:30 minute mile. Under my own power, I’m running faster than that, at some points I think quite a bit faster than that because I’m tired and I just want to get to the landmark I’ve set for myself where I can walk again. The problem with this is that I’m so shot when I get to walk again,...

The Power of Music

05/22/2009

I had every intention of going running this morning. Then I woke up with a headache and decided not to aggravate it further. Instead, I rolled back over and slept a little longer, got up, showered, took two tylenol and went to work. Just now though, out at lunch, I put on the radio in my car and heard one of my favorite running songs (Better Now by Collective Soul) and it got me all pumped. I don’t have a headache anymore, so I think I’ll go running when I get home from work. We get out a little early because of the holiday weekend and it’s a beautiful day. And now that the radio has me all ready to roll, I can hear my iPod calling me, and I’m anxious to move my feet. Happy Memorial Day weekend!
