I was supposed to be in Atlanta this week for work. But Atlanta was an ice skating rink. And the day we were supposed to take off? Lots more snow in New York. Canceled flights. Canceled trip. But the snow? I’ve had enough. Just when I thought I’d conquered the cold for outside runs and got prepared with all of my warm weather gear to run and bike outside, the snow hit. It hit hard. And it keeps hitting. I can only run outside either in the early morning during the week or at night because it’s winter and I have a job. I don’t really like to run at those times, but I do it. Problem is, early in the morning or after dark, the roads get icy, and right now, the shoulders of the road are buried under two feet of snow again in my neighborhood. We are in the pocket of Long Island that got 18 to 20 inches of snow Tuesday night into yesterday. Pretty? Sure. Treacherous? You bet. I don’t need to go trotting around a corner just to have my feet slip out from under me, landing me on my butt or worse twisting [...]

Not a 5K. 5 miles. Five long, hard miles. This was, by far, not my favorite racing experience. But I went, I saw, I ran, I finished. Very close to last. But that’s ok. I finished. No snowballs by the way. Not even any snow, although there were a few flurries the night before. I have been feeling like my running has been getting better, and actually it has. I went into this race with some nervousness (this would be the first time I’d take on this distance without any stops, ever). I ran 5 miles once a year ago, but it was a neighborhood run and at the 3-mile mark, I was able to stop home to pee, swig some water and head out again. I woke up with what felt like a cold coming on (stuffy, sore throat, cough kind of thing) but figured I could power through. It wasn’t that bad. I kept telling myself I was just being a baby because I didn’t feel like getting out of bed. By yesterday, I was fully sick. Today, it’s off to the doctor. Oh well. This was five straight miles on nice, level neighborhood streets, which was one [...]

Saturday was my first team run with Team In Training. It was not easy. First, there was this hill. A big hill. Not extraordinarily steep but it felt like we were climbing for at least the first two miles of the run. I was not prepared, mentally or physically, for this. I’m not now or ever will be a fan of hills. The area we were running in I would have thought would be flat. ugh. The race, I’m told, is pancake flat. That’s a good thing. But I suppose if I’m going to keep up with a team, I’ll need to start run training hills. I walk hills, but running them is a whole different animal. Second, no music. I know in triathlons, no iPods are allowed and I’ve always respected that rule, even if it does make my runs that much more difficult. I had my iPod for the training run, but was told it was a short run… I wouldn’t need it. So I didn’t use it. Big mistake. You see, my iPod helps drown out my breathing when it gets ragged (going up hills) and that helps me to continue running. I know it’s completely mental, [...]

I know I’ve been neglecting my blog, but geez. Today I was hacked. When I went into my site earlier this evening, there was a Turkish hacker message and it wasn’t kind. My apologies to anyone who may have been to my blog today before I discovered the infiltration. As you can see, we’re all fixed now. And I will try not to neglect my blog again. I don’t want evil messages showing up instead. In as much as I’ve been neglecting the blog, I’ve been neglecting my diet. Not completely, but enough that I’m frustrated with myself. Tomorrow is Halloween. And for me it is the beginning of whole food eating. No more packaged crap. No more frozen meals. I’m not saying I won’t indulge in some candy tomorrow, although I did enough of that today to last me a couple of weeks…. but starting tomorrow, my focus shifts to eating healthy food. The focus will be on cooking and paying attention to nutrients . And hopefully it will help to put me back on track. Counting points is just not cutting it. Your email:

Actually right now it’s raining, and while it will still be hot here in the Northeast tomorrow, the weather gurus say the string of thunderstorms blowing across Long Island will bring in some nice, dry hot air for a change. Yay! I’ve been avoiding running a lot lately because of the heat and humidity, but today I got tired of avoiding. I got up. I got dressed. I got outside. My sunglasses fogged up because my house is air conditioned and outside, well, it was sauna-like. Not only was it 80 degrees with 90% humidity, there wasn’t a leaf moving. No air. None. I still moved forward. I went for a two-mile run with some walking thrown in. It was not a fun run. It also wasn’t the worst run I’ve had. The negatives? I needed to walk, quite a bit. I hadn’t been eating great, even with my new photo diet thing so I felt really heavy this morning, like my sneakers were stuck to the ground with gum. In the beginning of the run, my shorts kept riding up and I had to keep fixing them…really annoying! The air had that hanging garbage smell that only a hot, [...]

I went for an outside run this morning. 2.5 miles. Yay! I surprised myself, in a good way. It’s been pretty much a month since I’ve run anywhere other than the treadmill. And my treadmill runs have been pretty awful. Lots of walking. I think that’s a mental thing between me and the treadmill though. This morning I ran 2.5 with only one walking break for a hill. My hip feels good today too. Yesterday I walked and it was a little twingy. Then I went to physical therapy and for the rest of the afternoon it was a little more uncomfortable. I often find though that for the hours after physical therapy, I’m more uncomfortable than I was before. Anyway, I got up this morning, and I felt great. I decided to run 2.5 outside to see how I would do the first time out. In my race July 11, I’ll have to run 3.5 but since today’s run went as well as it did, I think I should be able to push it up to 3.5 in two weeks. Two weeks! Acckkk!! It felt good to be running again. I’ve been doing other stuff but running makes me [...]

I did a brick tonight. The first one in a very long time. Every time in the last two months when I’d get to the point where I was ready for bricks, I hurt something. First the knee. Then the toe. But tonight I did a brick. 25 minutes on the bike (trainer) and then a 2-mile run, which also took just about 25 minutes. It was a very slow run, but it was mostly a run. I took two short walking breaks. One to get my iPod off shuffle mode because I needed the right music for this tough run. One because my legs went from feeling like lead to feeling like jello. Like I said it’s been a long time since I jumped off a bike and went for a run. But, I did it. I biked probably 6 or so miles in 25 minutes? I pushed pretty hard the whole time I was pedaling. And then I jumped off, took a swig of water and went out to run two miles. Those are the distances for Saturday’s race, plus the 400-meter pool swim. I wanted to do this race in much better shape than I was when [...]

My first tri of the season is five weeks from yesterday. And I’m ready to jump back into training full force to have a good race. This first race, EventPower’s Mini Mightyman (400-meter pool swim, 6-mile bike, 2-mile run) is the perfect race for starting the season, especially since I am still such a newbie. This morning I went out for a 3-mile run, and after last week’s runs, which were more walk/runs because of my knee, I’m happy to report that I ran the whole three miles in 37 minutes and felt good and strong. My breathing was steady, my legs felt good for most of the run and my knees behaved like there was never anything wrong. It was great. Tomorrow is a swim day, and I will start biking again this week too. Biking is still my least favorite part of training, but it has to be done, or I won’t be ready. This week too will begin bricks. I’m in much better physical condition than I was last year when I took on this race. I’m expecting it to be a really fun way to start the season this year. This year, I have a couple [...]

Today is a day to give thanks. And on my run this morning, I realized I have so much to be thankful for. Don’t get me wrong. This has been a challenging year. Today though (and every ok, most days), I choose not to look at the negative and focus on the positive instead. I am grateful that: I still have a job to complain about and DH has one too. I have roof over my head and food on my table. I have good friends and family who support me even when they think I’ve gone a little bonkers. I have the best kids ever. I have found my healthy place and continue to push myself to eat right and exercise, even if it isn’t always so easy. I have become a runner because I get so much back. It’s the end of November and still warm enough here in NY to go out for a run in a t-shirt and leggings. I finally figured out that having my health is the most important thing. With my health, anything else is possible. I challenged myself to become a triathlete this year. If I can swim, bike, run, coming from [...]

I was out shopping last night, knowing today was going to be a tough work day…again. I was right. I decided, while I was in Target, that I better have some manageable, calorie-counted chocolate on hand if I planned to make it through the day without ravaging the vending machine for the Linden Chocolate Chip Cookies and Milky Ways that are in there (yes, I know what’s in the vending machine at all times, but I am careful never, ever to put change into it anymore). Wondering what 100-calorie treat might just do the trick today, I spied 100-calorie M&M packs. They were like a beacon on a dark night. I scooped ‘em up and threw them in my cart. $3.99 for seven carefully calorie-counted-out packs. I grabbed a pack today when I went home for lunch, so I would have it for that much-needed 3:00 pm sugar injection. I almost always opt for a healthy snack at 3pm (yogurt, fruit, kashi bar), but today, I knew that wasn’t going to cut it. When I grabbed my M&Ms from the box, I thought, hmmm, these look surprsingly similar to the M&M fun packs. So I went online, just to see. [...]
