I’d been doing pretty well with my running. We were getting up at the crack of dawn and getting out there, and Sunday I even managed a 5-miler on rolling hills. I hadn’t run 5 miles in a while so I wasn’t sure how this would go, but it ended up being ok. The first two miles were tough, tough, tough, but once we got into a rhythm, the second half of the run seemed easier and I felt good at the finish. On this run, we run out from a beach, through a beautiful neighborhood and end back at the beach. You can’t ask for more than that. The weather up until yesterday has been really cooperative from a running perspective. Cool, but not freezing, and still short sleeves weather. I think though that’s done. Tomorrow, it’s supposed to be rainy and cold. Maybe even snow flurries. Ugh. Not ready for snow flurries or any other form of the white stuff yet. I’m hoping for a relatively snow-free winter this year, but we’ll see how that goes. At any rate, I’m hoping to get out on the road again tomorrow before the rain. And definitely on Sunday. After my [...]

Early in the morning before the sun comes up, before the birds start singing, before the majority of the people I know are out of bed, I’m out there running with Jen. On Tuesdays anyway. It’s our new routine. We started, I want to say five, six weeks ago? I should say I started because she’s been doing this early morning stuff much longer than that. Other than the fact that I’m ready for bed by noon, I’ve really come to enjoy this run time more than any other running that I do. It’s with my friend and we always have lots to talk about. Did I mention I can actually spit out a few words now when I run? That’s an improvement, believe me. Where we run is nice and flat. I go faster (because she’s faster than me and I need to keep up), and it’s dark. At first, the dark freaked me out a little, but now it’s awesome. Sometimes it’s still a super starry night when we are running. Looking up is magical. This morning, there was a bright full moon to guide us. The only tricky part sometimes is avoiding spider webs. You can’t see [...]

On August 21, I competed in the Pink Power triathlon in Richmond, VA. After listening to me talk on and on and on and on about triathlons and triathlon training, good and bad, my sister decided she wanted to do this too. I’m not sure how I convince other people to join me in this crazy endeavor. It’s not really that much fun. Crossing the finish line though is fun, and I must have talked to my sister enough to make her think this was a good idea. Liz trained hard and she had an awesome race. Me? Could have been better but I crossed the finish line. I didn’t train enough and I wasn’t ready for the hills in Virginia, even though Liz warned me over and over and over again that this was a hilly race. I signed up thinking this would be an easy race. All women, a pool swim, 11 mile bike and 5K run. But I wasn’t prepared for the HILLS. I headed down on Friday for the race (on Sunday). I had to put my car in for brakes and an oil change that morning. Almost $700 and 4 hours later, I had two [...]

I did what I thought would be my last triathlon of 2011 on Aug. 21, but it looks like that may change. This tri was challenging, hilly and hot. HOT has been a theme in my races this year. So I think I’ll go back and try this one again in October. I owe you a race report and you’ll get that soon. After this race, I spent a week, doing, well, nothing. I went for one walk. That was hot too. And humid. Hurricane Irene blew through Long Island on Sunday, and even if she was a tropical storm by the time she got here, she did her damage. We fared well by my house (lost a small tree and lots of branches), but others on LI and the other areas in her path had a tougher time. I’m just grateful it wasn’t worse than it was. Behind Irene, her torrential rains and winds, came a welcome breath of fresh air. No humidity, lower temperatures, sunny skies. Fall. It’s not quite fall yet by the calendar, but the crisp morning air is definitely leaning that way. Perfect running weather. I had a tough run in the “hot and hilly” [...]

Yesterday was Smith’s Point Tri. I never mentioned that I was doing this one because even though I’d signed up for it, I wasn’t sure I was going. The weather was tentative all week and while I’ve been working out, I don’t know if I could say I’ve been training the way I should have been before a race. We’re talking one brick workout in a couple of months. And I’d never done a race in the rain. The bike makes me nervous enough. The thought of biking on slick roads in the rain? That’s even scarier. We picked up our race packets on Saturday afternoon, still hedging whether or not we were doing this thing. We’d decide at 4:00 am, depending on the weather. Thinking I might not be going helped me sleep a little better on Saturday night, always a good thing. And when I woke up? No rain. I had packed my bag the night before and loaded my bike and other essentials in the car, so all I had to do was get dressed and eat and get on the road. The race site was only about 40 minutes away, so leaving at 4:45 gave us [...]

I am not a fan of bike training. It’s not that I don’t like being out on my bike. In this heat, the breeze that comes from moving at a decent pace makes the exercise tolerable. When I can get a good momentum going, I feel powerful. I can log a lot more miles in a lot less time than swimming or running. For some reason though, on the bike, I feel invisible to the cars that I’m sharing the road with. And trust me, I’m not small enough to be invisible to anyone. Here’s the thing. When I’m out on my bike on the road, I follow the rules. I wear my helmet. I stay on the right side of the road. I obey traffic lights and stop signs. I stay off the main roads as much as possible because cars going really fast scare me. Even so, I’ve had several close calls on my bike and I know plenty of others who have had the same. Here are three very simple rules for cars when sharing the road with a bicycle or a group of bicycles. You are bigger than me. And faster. If my bike hits you, [...]

It’s been a while, so I’ve got random stuff to write about. While I haven’t been great about posting to the ol’ blog, I have been keeping up with my training. In the past, when I let the blogging slip, it’s usually because I’ve let the workouts and healthy eating slip as well. Not much to write about then. Or maybe that’s when I should be writing the most, and confessing my slip-ups. So I’ll start this post with the confession that the holiday weekend— a four-day weekend for me— was not great healthy food-wise. It was fun food-wise, but the scale and I were not friends by yesterday morning. In this case though, I at least knew the why behind the 4-5 pounds I managed to pack on over the four days. Pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs and all sorts of other yummy things take center stage in our family on a holiday weekend. Did I mention seafood bisque in a bread bowl? Delicious and not so good for you. Yesterday, I was still coming down from the sugar high (it takes me a while to get back on track, but today it should all be good on the food [...]

Actually, it started with a no-good, awful, very bad mood a week ago Friday. And the mood, which I can only imagine had something to do with hormonal imbalances, led me to one of my mother’s recipes a week ago Saturday. We’d found the recipe weeks earlier and tacked it to the refrigerator with the intention of trying it at some point. But when Saturday afternoon rolled around and the no-good, awful, very bad mood had not subsided, I knew I needed some serious comfort food to help fight the battle. Out came the Crisco—yes, you use Crisco in this recipe–the sugar, the cocoa powder, the white flour, the sour milk, more sugar…. and I began assembling and baking what would turn out to be just like my mom’s Whoopie Pies. I have to admit the process at least distracted me from the mood for a while. And then when I tasted that first cake out of the oven (no icing yet), I was immediately transported back to an easier time, when I was maybe 8 years old. Ah, Crisco. I finished up the baking, which by the way made 40 cake halves or 20 complete pies ( if I [...]

I have been running for almost two and a half years now. Slowly. I started with Couch 2 5k and now I can run 5-, 6-mile distances as long as I keep my pace, although 3-4 is still my favorite distance. I’ve been running for more than two years. The thing is, I didn’t start running to become a runner. I started running so I could compete in a triathlon. I have resisted the running along the way. Almost always, I would start out on a run, wishing I was home already, wishing I could walk, feeling the twinges in my knees or hips. Running was a chore with fleeting moments of serenity or accomplishment. Running has been about finishing a run. Being done for the day. During my St. A’s training, in the freezing cold, I had to practice running without headphones, I had to make sure I got out to run at least 3 times a week, I had to push to longer distances, I had to run after being on a bike for 24 miles in the wind. I didn’t always like it, but I did it so I could compete in a triathlon. My run in [...]

I feel like I had been living, breathing and sleeping St. Anthony’s Tri training for the past six months. I didn’t realize how much until I didn’t have to do it anymore. I rarely slept past 6:00 am on a Saturday or Sunday, because training needed to get done. My days revolved around work and working out. In the last couple of months before the race, I was too afraid not to get to the gym or out on the road, for fear I wouldn’t be ready. Don’t get me wrong. I had my off days, but even when I was “off,” I was worrying that I wasn’t training enough for this race. There was so much to do to prepare for it, from fundraising to getting comfortable running without my iPod. In the end, it was awesome, but I am happy it’s behind me. Last week, I did absolutely nothing. Well, almost nothing. I signed up for Smith’s Point Sprint Triathlon in August (training in the summer for a summer race, what a concept!). Other than that though, I did nothing. I rested my achy body from Monday (other than a short walk to the yogurt shop to “stretch” [...]
