Setting Weight Loss and Fitness Goals

These last couple of weeks on my fitness journey have been a slippery slope. The change in weather/daylight has thrown off my exercise routine. And after 15 months of being in control of my food intake, recently, that’s been slipping too. Not measuring here, a little extra there, and really, how bad can that fun-size candy bar or handful of candy corn be in the overall grand scheme of things? Apparently pretty bad if I’m not accouting for it because inevitably one turns into two turns into too many to count. Not that I haven’t allowed myself candy or other goodies before. And not that I haven’t had days where I’ve eaten whatever I wanted. I do. It’s the way I’ve been able to stay in control this time. But, I was in control. Those days where I’d allow myself whatever I felt like eating were planned. And the...

Developing a Healthy Relationship With Food

10/22/2009

I do not have a healthy relationship with food. Or should I say I don’t have a healthy relationship with the part of my brain that decides what and how much I eat. I so desperately would like this to change, and I’d been hopeful that it could, but I’ve come to the conclusion that it just isn’t going to. And I would venture to guess that for anyone with the food and weight issues that I’ve had most of my life, that relationship will never change either. It would certainly explain why so many people gain weight back after working so hard to lose it. When I started Weight Watchers last year, I was diligent about tracking every little thing I put in my mouth, even on the days that I was allowing myself to eat whatever I wanted. For 9 months, I knew exactly the number of...

Run, Reflect, Run

Yesterday was my 25th wedding anniversary. My husband and I chose to keep things low-key cause that’s the way we are and well, it was a Tuesday. We both also turned 50 this year. No fanfare. It is a happy anniversary even though we both wish we could win lotto and retire from our jobs. Last night was business as usual although he did buy me beautiful roses and we exchanged heartfelt cards. He, though, has to be up at 4:00 am to go to work and I wanted to go running last night to work out the aches and pains from the “round” workout the night before. He wanted to veg, so he didn’t mind that I was heading out. Side note: Boy it’s getting dark early these days…. I don’t know that I will ever love running after work. It’s just tough. I made sure last night...

Fessing Up

10/20/2009
By

You may have noticed my absence from the blog world and even twitter this week. Well, not only did I fall off the edge of the virtual world, I more or less fell off of the “watching what I eat, exercising regularly” wagon as well. I can’t really pinpoint what did me in. A change in the weather (which I had hoped to conquer per my last post)? Stress? Hormones? I’ve been married for 25  years and I deserved a reward? An unrelenting urge for brownies? Whatever the cause, it derailed me big-time. From Tuesday through Friday, there was no exercise. And while I would start the days off eating healthfully, by lunchtime, I was throwing my food out of whack too. The result? I gained 5 pounds in a week. I got back on the exercise train on Saturday with a really strong 3-mile run. The clouds broke...

A Change in the Weather

A Change in the Weather

Our weather here shifted this week. It’s been getting more and more fall-like all along, but this week, it’s cold. And it promises to be rainy by the end of the week. Until now, I’ve been still getting my runs in outside. First in the morning, and more recently after work, while it’s still light out. But it seems like even the light is fading quickly. Although today that may have just been the effect of the clouds that are bringing the impending rain. As a result, I haven’t run since Sunday. I do best when I can work out in the morning and now it’s too dark. The gray, windy afternoons haven’t been too conducive to getting outside to run either. I worked out with my trainer on Monday night, but two days of inactivity have me jonesing for some movement. I never thought I would crave movement...

What You Need to Become a Triathlete

10/13/2009

Sunday, when I was checking stats for my brother’s triathlon that morning, on the event site, there was a link to articles about triathlon and training. Of course, being a triathlon newbie, I’m always interested in whatever information I can find on the subject. The title for this one article was similar to the title on my blog post here…and so begins my rant. Expecting to find an article on training techniques, skill sets, or even just some encouraging words of wisdom, I was unpleasantly suprised to find an article telling me about all the equipment I needed to BUY before I could start training to become a triathlete. What? HUH? Not to mention, this guy was suggesting that we all go out and buy the top-of-the-line gear, which if you’ve done your homework, you’ll know could cost you thousands of dollars. Why would I go and buy a...

Ready, Set, Go!

Ready, Set, Go!

Yesterday, I went to watch the Cedar Beach Sprint Triathlon. My brother, who got me into this in the first place, was competing, as was my cousin, who got my brother hooked on triathlon. While it was a sprint distance, 750m swim, 15-mile bike and 5k run, I chose not to compete because I don’t have a wetsuit yet and well, it’s October. And it was cold. Still, I got up before it was light, grabbed something quick to eat and headed on over to watch the boys compete. I’d never seen my brother race before and I owed him one. Besides, I wanted to watch the big boys play. I’m a newbie, and while I can finish these races, I don’t come close to the athletic caliber of my brother or my cousin. When I got there and everyone was setting up and getting ready to head into...
