Easter Candy – A Story of Self-Sabotage

Easter Candy – A Story of Self-Sabotage

When I came back from Chicago two weeks ago, I got back on the training/eating healthy road. And I’ve done really well, having lost much of the weight I gained during the ridiculous work schedule stress of February and early March. I was very pleased with the numbers on the scale last week. This week, as often happens after a big loss (I was down 9 pounds), a couple of pounds jump back on and then just stay there. Even when I think I’m doing everything right— I say think, because it’s rare that I actually am doing everything right— that scale doesn’t want to budge, and it frustrates me. And frustration leads to? You guessed, it food cravings. At this time of year, candy is the number one food craving I have to contend with. Candy is one of my biggest challenges. But Easter candy brings its own...

Today, Fat Girl Is Winning

02/14/2010

Sometimes lately, I think this blog should be called Fat Girl vs. Fit Girl. This being fit thing can certainly feel like a championship fight some days. Today is one of those days. In fact, this has just been one of those weekends. As Fit Girl, over the last week, I’ve been assessing what I eat and trying to incorporate better choices and get rid of some of the empty calories I consume. I could live on 100-calorie snack packs, and since the beginning, I definitely consumed more of those than I should. Weight Watchers is great for portion control, and while I lost weight, I was still not making the best choices from a nutrition perspective a lot of the time. When my weight loss stalled 6 months ago, any amount of climbing back on the Weight Watchers points wagon has been to no avail, I’m suspecting because...

I Need To Run

I Need To Run

I’m sitting here at 10:30 at night finishing up on the computer after a stressful day, a blog class and playing around with my Twitter design for way too long. It has been a sitting kind of day. I’m a magazine editor by day and I can end up in front of the computer or the TV at night for lengthy periods of time as well. Until a year ago, that was my exercise. But not anymore. Now I run. I swim. I roll around on big balls. I bike. And I like it. No, scratch that, I love it. Not always when I’m doing it, but around it. Exercise makes me feel strong. Exercise makes me feel focused. Exercise really helps me to relax. Exercise makes me feel like a bad-ass. Exercise helps me to not reach for the wrong foods when I’m really stressed out. Who knew...

The Cost of 100-Calorie Candy

The Cost of 100-Calorie Candy

I was out shopping last night, knowing today was going to be a tough work day…again. I was right. I decided, while I was in Target, that  I better have some manageable, calorie-counted chocolate on hand if  I planned to make it through the day without ravaging the vending machine for the Linden Chocolate Chip Cookies and Milky Ways that are in there (yes, I know what’s in the vending machine at all times, but I am careful never, ever to put change into it anymore). Wondering what 100-calorie treat might just do the trick today, I spied 100-calorie M&M packs. They were like a beacon on a dark night. I scooped ‘em up and threw them in my cart. $3.99 for seven carefully calorie-counted-out packs. I grabbed a pack today when I went home for lunch, so I would have it for that much-needed 3:00 pm sugar injection....

The 3 Musketeers Bar Challenge

The 3 Musketeers Bar Challenge

Yesterday, around 4:00 pm, I was headed out to my niece’s birthday part and had to stop at Walgreen’s for a card and a couple of waters for hubby and me for the ride. For whatever reason, I strolled down the candy aisle aimlessly, not really knowing what I was looking for. But when I chanced upon the 3 Musketeers bars, I knew exactly why I ended up in that aisle. There’s something about 3 Musketeers bars for me. They are such chocolately goodness, but lower in fat? Somehow, if I’m going to eat a candy bar, that is always the one I gravitate toward. I snatched up the candy bar, went to the register and paid (before I had a chance to rethink my decision) and hopped in the car. Where I rethought my decision. Between the Walgreen’s register and the car, I had rationalized that if I...

The Candy Conspiracy

The Candy Conspiracy

I was in Walmart last week, buying size 14 pants….a size I haven’t seen in many, many years. It was soooo exciting! Even though I still think sizes have gotten larger along the way (or else how else could they possibly fit me?), buying a size 14 pair of pants that I actually wore to work the next day was a thrill! Happily striding up to the checkout counter, I buzzed right past the pretty packages of Valentine’s Day candy–you know the ones in the heart boxes where you have to bite in to find out just what you’re eating? I love those. And in the past I could finish a box in one sitting. Always had to know what was in that last one? Would it be caramel or coconut or some fruity creme? But this day? I went right past. I didn’t even look at the boxes...

What would we do without Hostess 100-calorie cupcakes?

What would we do without Hostess 100-calorie cupcakes?

That’s all I have to say! I’m in week 12 of weight watchers and I’ve lost 18.8 pounds. Up until this week, I have been doing really well. This has felt easy, I’ve had a routine and being the sugarholic that I am, I’ve managed to find dessert substitutes that don’t sabotage my program…. weight watchers cookies and cream ice cream bars (2 points) or fudgsicles (1 point), WW chocolate chip cookies (1 point for one), and Hostess 100-calorie cupcakes (the chocolate ones are only 1 point for a pack). I’ve limited my yummy snacks like this to twice a day (sometimes three times if I’m really feeling like I need an additional fix) and I’ve felt great and the weight is coming off. For whatever reason, this week— the cooler weather? that time of the month?— I don’t know, I have been craving comfort foods like  homemade mac...
