An Apple A Day Keeps The Doctor Away. Or Is It Exercise?

01/11/2010

Yesterday morning when I came home from swimming, my husband yelled at me. “It’s 20 degrees out! Your hair is wet. What, are you trying to get sick?” Isn’t it sweet that he wants to take care of me? I reminded him that germs can’t live in the cold outside, and having a wet head for a few seconds in the cold isn’t going to get me sick. It might get me frozen hair, but not sick. We don’t get sick from being outside in the cold. We get sick because it’s cold out and we spend so much time indoors around other sick people. It started thinking about getting sick. Not with anything life-threatening, but with the usual winter culprits: a cold, sore throat, a stomach virus, or this year’s favorite: Swine Flu. And I realized I haven’t been sick since I started taking better care of myself....

Starting Over

11/16/2009

With the end of race season came a backlash of sorts that I didn’t anticipate. Since I’d set such high goals for next season, I figured I’d stay on track with my diet and exercise plan, no problem. It went well for a couple of weeks and then, problem. Little by little I let old eating behaviors back in and that, in turn, slowed up my exercise some. No excuses, it just happened. I keep trying to get back on track in fits and starts. My last post was titled “I need to run” and I had hoped by posting it, I would have actually gotten out there to do it. That morning however was cold and windy and rainy. I could have gone to the gym. I opted to roll over and go back to sleep. I actually haven’t been running in 8 days. Saturday, the day started...

I'll Do It My Way (and you should do it your way)

Over at the FoodFoodBodyBody blog, Foodie McBody has a post about eating an amazing slice of pizza after deliberating about it for a quite a while. Bottom line, she ate it, she enjoyed it, and she stayed within the boundaries of her health and fitness plan. In the comments section, there was everything from “I could never eat pizza or anything else not on my healthy list” to me, who eats pizza at least once a week. A slice of heaven pizza is only 6 points, although, living here in NY, I usually count it as 8 on Weight Watchers. I fit it in to my points or I use weekly points. I can also stick to one slice, maybe 1 and a 1/2  if I’m particularly hungry. The point is there is no one way to do the diet/exercise thing right. What’s most important is finding the way...

You Are What You Eat

You Are What You Eat

For the most part, since starting my get-fit journey, I eat pretty healthy. Not always perfect, but better than I used to. I limit sweets and caffeine. I make sure I eat lean proteins, lots of fiber, fruit and some veggies (not a big fan of veggies but I’m working on it!) But this weekend, being my birthday and all, I was not as careful about what went into my mouth. And I managed to eat a surprising amount of birthday cake and other goodies. The birthday dinner was lobster and steak…barring the butter, not such bad choices, although I will admit there was an abundance of food. But my downfall was definitely the sweets. Always has been, always will be. I ate A LOT of cake on Sunday and Monday (the actual birthday). And then I went running on Tuesday. ARGGGHHH. I felt like I was running in...
