Starting Over

11/16/2009

With the end of race season came a backlash of sorts that I didn’t anticipate. Since I’d set such high goals for next season, I figured I’d stay on track with my diet and exercise plan, no problem. It went well for a couple of weeks and then, problem. Little by little I let old eating behaviors back in and that, in turn, slowed up my exercise some. No excuses, it just happened. I keep trying to get back on track in fits and starts. My last post was titled “I need to run” and I had hoped by posting it, I would have actually gotten out there to do it. That morning however was cold and windy and rainy. I could have gone to the gym. I opted to roll over and go back to sleep. I actually haven’t been running in 8 days. Saturday, the day started...

Best. Apples. Ever.

Best. Apples. Ever.

I’ve gone back to my beginnings with my weight-loss food choices. I had been rocking the boat as of late, letting some of the old, “not so good for me” foods back in and leaving some of the “better for you” foods out. I’m a convenience eater, meaning my food has to be quick and easy because I always seem to be on the run. So to stay on track, a routine and an arsenal of foods that are a) healthy, b) easy or c) less bad for me than other choices always have to be in my house. That said, and it being fall, one of my favorite staples, especially at this time of year, is apples. More specifically, Gala Apples. They are the Best. Apples. Ever. They are crunchy, sweet and juicy and almost always stop my cravings for other sweets dead in their tracks. While I’ve...

Setting Weight Loss and Fitness Goals

10/26/2009

These last couple of weeks on my fitness journey have been a slippery slope. The change in weather/daylight has thrown off my exercise routine. And after 15 months of being in control of my food intake, recently, that’s been slipping too. Not measuring here, a little extra there, and really, how bad can that fun-size candy bar or handful of candy corn be in the overall grand scheme of things? Apparently pretty bad if I’m not accouting for it because inevitably one turns into two turns into too many to count. Not that I haven’t allowed myself candy or other goodies before. And not that I haven’t had days where I’ve eaten whatever I wanted. I do. It’s the way I’ve been able to stay in control this time. But, I was in control. Those days where I’d allow myself whatever I felt like eating were planned. And the...

Run, Reflect, Run

10/21/2009

Yesterday was my 25th wedding anniversary. My husband and I chose to keep things low-key cause that’s the way we are and well, it was a Tuesday. We both also turned 50 this year. No fanfare. It is a happy anniversary even though we both wish we could win lotto and retire from our jobs. Last night was business as usual although he did buy me beautiful roses and we exchanged heartfelt cards. He, though, has to be up at 4:00 am to go to work and I wanted to go running last night to work out the aches and pains from the “round” workout the night before. He wanted to veg, so he didn’t mind that I was heading out. Side note: Boy it’s getting dark early these days…. I don’t know that I will ever love running after work. It’s just tough. I made sure last night...

Fessing Up

10/20/2009

You may have noticed my absence from the blog world and even twitter this week. Well, not only did I fall off the edge of the virtual world, I more or less fell off of the “watching what I eat, exercising regularly” wagon as well. I can’t really pinpoint what did me in. A change in the weather (which I had hoped to conquer per my last post)? Stress? Hormones? I’ve been married for 25  years and I deserved a reward? An unrelenting urge for brownies? Whatever the cause, it derailed me big-time. From Tuesday through Friday, there was no exercise. And while I would start the days off eating healthfully, by lunchtime, I was throwing my food out of whack too. The result? I gained 5 pounds in a week. I got back on the exercise train on Saturday with a really strong 3-mile run. The clouds broke...

What You Need to Become a Triathlete

10/13/2009

Sunday, when I was checking stats for my brother’s triathlon that morning, on the event site, there was a link to articles about triathlon and training. Of course, being a triathlon newbie, I’m always interested in whatever information I can find on the subject. The title for this one article was similar to the title on my blog post here…and so begins my rant. Expecting to find an article on training techniques, skill sets, or even just some encouraging words of wisdom, I was unpleasantly suprised to find an article telling me about all the equipment I needed to BUY before I could start training to become a triathlete. What? HUH? Not to mention, this guy was suggesting that we all go out and buy the top-of-the-line gear, which if you’ve done your homework, you’ll know could cost you thousands of dollars. Why would I go and buy a...

Ready, Set, Go!

Ready, Set, Go!

Yesterday, I went to watch the Cedar Beach Sprint Triathlon. My brother, who got me into this in the first place, was competing, as was my cousin, who got my brother hooked on triathlon. While it was a sprint distance, 750m swim, 15-mile bike and 5k run, I chose not to compete because I don’t have a wetsuit yet and well, it’s October. And it was cold. Still, I got up before it was light, grabbed something quick to eat and headed on over to watch the boys compete. I’d never seen my brother race before and I owed him one. Besides, I wanted to watch the big boys play. I’m a newbie, and while I can finish these races, I don’t come close to the athletic caliber of my brother or my cousin. When I got there and everyone was setting up and getting ready to head into...

Powering Through

10/09/2009

Yesterday I had a day off from work. “Yippee!!!!” you might say. “A day off, oh how I could use a day off from work,” you might think, feeling slightly jealous that I actually had a coveted day off from work. However, when you hear WHY I was off from work, you will definitely cringe and maybe even feel sorry for me. I’m being audited by the IRS. Yesterday’s day off was set so I could go sit with my accountant and go over all of the paperwork I had and will still need for the audit. I am one of the lucky ones. I have audit protection. I don’t have to sit across from the scary IRS people, explaining why and what I did in 2007 (which is at this point a faded memory). Nope. I don’t have to go. My accountant does that. But I do still...

Why Run?

10/07/2009
Why Run?

When I started running, it was so I could compete in triathlons. I was really looking for a race vehicle where I would be able to swim, something I consider myself pretty good at. It was the running that would be the tricky part. It took me the better part of a year to get to a point of running (very slowly) a distance that would be considered respectable in the race world (5K, 3.1 miles) but I can do it now. It took the rest of the year to get to a point where I didn’t dread running 3.1 miles. Surprisingly, I can run that distance now without too much dread. And finishing any distance always feels like an accomplishment. I was worried though that after race season ended (Sept. 13 for me), I wouldn’t run again until February…a couple of months before my next race season starts....

Climbing Back On The Wagon After A Hard Fall

08/24/2009
Climbing Back On The Wagon After A Hard Fall

When I wrote my blog post on Wednesday, I wrote that I was struggling with staying on track food-wise. I somehow managed to stay in control until that evening when I came home to pizza and scarfed two pieces without even thinking about it. I will admit, even though I felt a little guilty later, it felt GOOD to eat with abandon. So good, in fact, that it sent me on a downward spiral for the next four days. By day four, however, it didn’t feel so good anymore. Thursday there was seafood bisque in a bread bowl and delicious chocolate truffles. Friday it was an overload on english muffins with butter and cinnamon sugar (a favorite treat but I always stop at one. Mind you, these are the high-fiber, low-cal multigrain english muffins and I used light butter, but still. Did I really need two of them? Saturday,...
