Race Splits

04/23/2009

Event Power posted race splits for last Saturday’s Mini Mightyman race, which I’d been waiting for anxiously since that day. My transition times were a little odd, but I was more pleased with my run times than I thought I’d be. The race was a 1 mile run, 6 mile bike, 1 mile run. My times were 10:48 for the first mile run, 24:37 for the 6 mile bike and 12:44 for the second mile run. My transition times were only seconds (19 and 21, respectively), which I know can’t be right, even though I didn’t have to change sneakers or dry off…still had to rack my bike and get my helmet on and off. I’m wondering if some of my transition time got sucked up into my bike time. Either way, for my first time out, I’m pleased with my times. They were far from the fastest in...

From Triathlon to Duathlon – So Bummed

04/13/2009

So I go on the Event Power LI website today to get registration info for my race on Saturday to find out its no longer a triathlon. It’s  a duathlon. Apparently one of the light fixtures fell into the pool last week, and now that’s closed for repairs until May 1. I was really looking forward to starting my triathon experience with a pool swim to get my feet wet (so to speak). Now it’s a 1 mile run, 6 mile bike, 1 mile run. Bummer. I’m still going. I’ve been working too hard to pass it up now. There’s another flat race coming up in June. It’s much longer than this starter race, but with 7 weeks still left to train, maybe I’ll sign up for that one. 750-meter swim (open water), 11-mile bike, 3.1 mile run. Would 6 weeks be enough time to almost double my distances?...

Paying Attention To Triathlon Training Progress

02/09/2009

Yesterday was a beautiful day by me, 55 degrees, sunny, a little breezy. It was the first decently warm weather we’ve had in what seems like forever. Because it’s winter, I’ve been training for my triathlon indoors…indoor pool, treadmill and stationary bike. I know training on the equipment is different than actually running on pavement, riding a bike, etc., but I feel like I’ve been building up and I thought I was ready to take at least the running portion outside, especially since it was such a beautiful day. I went to the gym on Saturday and had a strong 3-mile walk/run and a good 6-mile bike. It was morning (I now realize I’m going to have to get up early through the workweek and get my training in early. It’s just easier). I managed a 5-1/2 minute interval, and longer than 3-minute intervals the rest of the time...

Triathlon Training – Couch 2 5K

Triathlon Training – Couch 2 5K

I’ve been training for my triathlon coming up in April. Suddenly, four months doesn’t seem like a whole lot of time. My biggest challenge is the running part because I’ve never ever been a runner. I barely completed the 1-mile runs in high school (and I was in good shape then!). Now 30-something years later, I’m starting to run. Tonight I started week three of my Couch 2 5K training, only I modified it some. In week one, you run 60 seconds, walk 90 seconds. In week two, you run 90 seconds, walk two minutes (more than once obviously) and in week three, you are supposed to run 90 seconds, walk 90, run 3 minutes, walk 3 minutes. Yeah, no. So tonight I ran 90, walked 90, ran 2 minutes, walked 2 minutes and so forth for 20-something minutes. I’m hoping by the end of week three, I’ll be...

I Joined the Gym

11/17/2008

So I did it. On Monday last week I joined a gym. It was something I was trying to avoid because I’ve never been a gym person, but it’s dark out now and I haven’t been able to get my walking in. And besides, I have a big fitness goal for April that would be almost impossible to meet without a pool. So I joined a gym with a pool. I finally went to the gym for the first time on Saturday (and then again yesterday!). Surprisingly I enjoyed it. I found that it’s easier to run on a treadmill right now than the street (I’m still mostly walking and then running a half lap every half mile or so). And I went swimming. I’ve always been a strong swimmer, having spent my youth at beaches, my teen years as a competitive swimmer and then as a lifeguard through...

Fifty by Fifty

Fifty by Fifty

I’m turning 50 in May. Ouch. Not sure I’m loving that number. Someday I’ll blog about my torn rotator cuff and the doctor telling me I had a 48-year-old shoulder. But I digress… So when I started Weight Watchers in July, I decided that I wanted to be 50 pounds (or more) lighter by my 50th birthday. If I have to get older, I’m going to feel better about myself at 50 than I did at 48 or 49. I lost this kind of weight just before 40 too (65 pounds when  I was 38 to be exact.) Before I gained it all back…I have gained most of it back…I decided it was time to get back on the stick. So that’s my goal. And it feels achievable. I’m down 18.8* pounds as of yesterday. And I’m now walking 3 miles at a clip. Today, I even ran a...

Walking In The Rain

09/29/2008

I enjoy walking outside. I’d never go as far as I do if I was trying to do it on a treadmill. So where I live, it was very rainy this weekend, not great for walking long distances. Yesterday morning when I got ready to go though, the rain had stopped and I thought I could get in at least two miles before it started again. I was wrong. I was probably just about as far away from my house as I could be on a two-mile walk when the rain started, and by the time I was three quarters of the way, it was pouring. I tucked my ipod into my shirt and kept going because there was nothing else I could do. Fortunately for me, I have a good hubby who came looking for me. He picked me up when I had about a quarter of a...

My 2-mile triumph

08/30/2008

I just came back from walking. And today I walked 2.1 miles. Six weeks ago I started weight watchers. I’ve lost 12 pounds. Five weeks ago, I started walking again. The purpose of this blog in the first place was to be accountable while I got fit before my 50th birthday. I started and stopped, just like I had started and stopped the walking and eating healthy…so many times. But now, with the help of weight watchers, I feel like I’ve found my zone. And I make sure I go walking. I started walking a mile five weeks ago. Kicked it up to 1.5 miles for a couple of weeks with slightly more mileage at times. I throw on my iPod with rockin music and I walk hard. I wasn’t so sure about the two miles because after 1.5, I feel it. But today, I made it the full...

Proud Moments on the Weight Loss, Getting Healthy Journey

08/18/2008

Since this Weight Watcher’s journey will be a long one for me this time, I’ve decided to add a category to my blog called “Proud Moments.” Because really, isn’t getting healthy about the little changes we make and the little triumphs we experience along the way and how great those make us feel? Something I’m trying to do differently this time around is to applaud myself for the good choices I do make and those results, and not beat myself up when there are setbacks. It’s a lifelong journey after all, and I’ve found that nothing in life every truly goes smoothly. I have been working very hard to block out that little negative voice that pops up in my head and tries to throw me off track. Instead, I’m vowing to keep a positive internal dialogue on this weight loss journey. That said, PROUD MOMENT FOR TODAY: When...

My Birthday Promise To Get Fit And Fabulous

05/21/2008

I turned 49 on Sunday (yes for the first time!) And to celebrate my birthday, I took a couple of days off from work to do some soul searching and unwind. The weather Saturday morning was spectacular, so I went for a walk. And then I went again on Sunday, and Monday and today. And I had energy and got more done and I was just so proud of myself. Right now, I’m the fat girl. My family hates when I say that but with at least 50 pounds to lose, it’s justified. And I’m ok with that. I don’t hate my body and I certainly don’t feel 49 most of the time. But I sit at a desk all day, and then I’m a crafter by night, either sitting at the computer more or sitting at my craft table. And my butt? Well that is just starting to...
