The Vicious Circle

03/12/2010

I understand now how so many of us end up gaining our weight back no matter how hard we try to keep it off. It’s the vicious circle. This circle starts out sweet. We start eating right and getting some exercise… our bodies respond by losing weight and toning up. And we feel great! And we keep going until we’ve lost as much weight as our bodies allow before hitting a plateau. Then the frustration sets in. Maybe we let more food creep back in than we should. Maybe we let our guards down just a little. We get a little lazy and stop tracking, just for a couple of days. But then it’s tough to get back to tracking all the time, so we try a new approach. For me, it was more nutritious eating, but somewhere along the line, I’m eating too much of something I shouldn’t...

Developing a Healthy Relationship With Food

10/22/2009

I do not have a healthy relationship with food. Or should I say I don’t have a healthy relationship with the part of my brain that decides what and how much I eat. I so desperately would like this to change, and I’d been hopeful that it could, but I’ve come to the conclusion that it just isn’t going to. And I would venture to guess that for anyone with the food and weight issues that I’ve had most of my life, that relationship will never change either. It would certainly explain why so many people gain weight back after working so hard to lose it. When I started Weight Watchers last year, I was diligent about tracking every little thing I put in my mouth, even on the days that I was allowing myself to eat whatever I wanted. For 9 months, I knew exactly the number of...

Weight Watchers Tracking and Photo Dieting

09/09/2008

I’m doing pretty well on Weight Watchers and one of the tools that is really helping me to succeed this time is tracking. I’m religiously writing down everything I put in my mouth, even if it’s something I should not be eating. As I finish up each week, I also date my trackers and put the amount of weight that I lost that week on the front of the tracker. I’ve been paying attention to my fruits and veggies and trying to eat more healthfully than I have in the past. Sometimes it works, sometimes not so much. I still have days where I manage to stay in points but eat 3 WW ice creams. I stumbled across this cool idea on wordpress this morning. Photo dieting….instead of just writing everything down, you take pictures of everything you eat. Talk about accountability. Not quite sure how I would do...

Back to Weight Watchers and the 3-point sandwich…YUM!

07/27/2008

When I started this blog, it was because I had given up on “dieting” since that wasn’t working for me. I was going to walk and exercise and get fit all on my own. hmmmmm…. That wasn’t working for me either. I did walk for a few weeks. Felt better but no weight loss. I did try eating better, but I wasn’t tracking and well, we know how that goes. So two weeks ago, I went back to Weight Watchers. I tracked everything I ate, stayed in points, and lost 4.8 pounds the first week. My daughter came with me and she lost 4 pounds (which would have been more had she worn shorts, not jeans, like she had the week before….we all know those weight watcher tricks–she’s new!) I realize now that the accountability and the tracking are key to my being successful at any type of weight...
