A Fresh Start

A Fresh Start

Rotten cold over. Check Holiday feasting and revelry done. Check 2010-2011 Winter Blizzard over. Check (and let’s hope there’s not another one!) Resolutions for 2011 firmly in place? Well that’s what we’re doing here. I’ve committed to Team in Training and an Olympic Distance Triathlon for May 1. Training was going well until Rotten Cold took over. Now it’s been a couple of weeks. Ack! Tomorrow means back to the gym. I got all kinds of cool outdoor running gear for Christmas but old man Winter has put outdoor training on hold for at least a week. Maybe it will rain next weekend. In the meantime, I can break in the new sneaks on the treadmill. The Diet! I’ve stopped and started so many times this year with a new healthy eating regimen, I’ve lost count. What I haven’t lost count of are the pounds I’ve managed to find...

LARA Bars – How Did I Not Know?

LARA Bars – How Did I Not Know?

A couple of months ago, I discovered LARA bars. Rather, I read about them on another bloggy site and then found them in Sam’s Club and thought, “Let’s give these a try.” At Sam’s Club, they had a variety pack of LARA Bars in Apple Pie, Cherry Pie and Cashew Cookie flavors. It was risky. 18 LARA Bars for, oh, I don’t know, 16 bucks? If we didn’t like them, that would have been kind of a waste of money. But alas, they were yummy and the hubs and I both like them, so they get eaten. But here’s the cool part. I thought LARA bars only came in those flavors. Until….. a few weeks ago when I went to visit the sister in Virginia. I ate my Apple Pie and Cherry Pie bars on the way down, and didn’t have any left to go home with. They are...

Olive Oil Mayo And Other Health-ier Favorites

Olive Oil Mayo And Other Health-ier Favorites

Since I have been struggling to eat healthy all week, I’d recap some of the healthier choices and substitutions I have made along the way and stuck with, even when I fall off the wagon in some of my other food choices. The newest addition to my healthier eating routine is Olive Oil Mayo. I don’t eat a lot of mayo at all anymore, but when I do, I am a mayonnaise purist. No light mayo in my egg or tuna salad. No thank you. So I was really hesitant to give this healthier mayo version a try. Can I just say yum? It has a slightly tangier flavor than regular mayo, but the consistency and overall taste is great, in egg salad anyway. With half the calories and fat, we’ve got a winner! Other food substitutions I’ve made and now can’t live without: Land O’ Lakes Light Butter...

Sweet Rewards

Sweet Rewards

When I was growing up, we were always rewarded with sweets. “Finish your dinner and you’ll get dessert.” Sometimes only the thought of homemade brownies or bread pudding would help get me through the lima beans or the liver. We didn’t have a dog you could pass undesirable food off to in a napkin. When we got home from school, we got a “snack.” Usually chocolate, cakey, always sweet. Apples and bananas didn’t count. And with six kids, my mother would have had a riot on her hands if she tried it. Birthdays, graduations, weddings. What’s a celebration without cake? Without sweets? In my last job, on your birthday, everyone in the department would park goodies at your desk: brownies, cookies, cupcakes. Everyone would visit all day and enjoy the feast. But you had it at your desk all day. Let’s just say no one ever took their birthday...

Weighing In

Weighing In

I am a self-admitted scale junky. Not a day goes by where I don’t get on the scale first thing in the morning to see where the numbers are. Lately, I haven’t been too impressed with those numbers, as I’ve been struggling a little to stay on the right track with food. My birthday was last week so that killed part  of that; I pulled it back together at the end of the week and then, last night? Barbecue. Ah well, I had a good day up until barbecue. And when the kiddos went for ice cream at Friendly’s for dessert, I declined. A win in my book! But as I was saying… I weigh in every day. At least I did weigh in every day until the battery died in my scale last week. Now I can step on the scale if I want to, but it doesn’t...

Weight Watchers Needs a New Monster

Weight Watchers Needs a New Monster

Weight Watchers has the Hungry monster. They rolled him out last year with the Momentum program. He’s cute. A little too cute perhaps. He reminds me of the monster in old Bugs Bunny cartoons. The thing is, for most of us trying to lose weight or maintain a weight loss, hunger is hardly the problem. Weight Watchers addresses this with the Hungry monster. They suggest we evaluate why we are eating. Hungry? Bored? Stressed? Angry? You get the drill. And for an emotional eater like me, any of those are possible triggers that could lead me to a box of cookies. Since the holidays though, for me, having control over my eating, or should I say not having control,  has been more about mindfulness. I’m wondering if Weight Watchers should change the name of the Hungry monster to the Mindless Eating monster. Cause let’s face it, for those of...

Holiday Lessons

01/03/2010

I started writing this post earlier from the perspective that the holidays derail us…on our diets, on our budgets, on whatever it is we are working on. The holidays (from Thanksgiving through New Year’s) give us a license to eat, to shop and to well, just put our feet up. When I started writing however, I realized I was blaming the holidays for my errant behaviors this season. And that’s not entirely fair. No one put the cookies in my mouth or tied me into my snuggly warm bed so I couldn’t get to the gym in the morning. No one held a gun to my head in the stores  to buy those extra presents when I had bills to pay, or to wait until January to get that important project started that’s going to make me my millions. Nope. I did it all by myself. And I realized...

Fessing Up

10/20/2009

You may have noticed my absence from the blog world and even twitter this week. Well, not only did I fall off the edge of the virtual world, I more or less fell off of the “watching what I eat, exercising regularly” wagon as well. I can’t really pinpoint what did me in. A change in the weather (which I had hoped to conquer per my last post)? Stress? Hormones? I’ve been married for 25  years and I deserved a reward? An unrelenting urge for brownies? Whatever the cause, it derailed me big-time. From Tuesday through Friday, there was no exercise. And while I would start the days off eating healthfully, by lunchtime, I was throwing my food out of whack too. The result? I gained 5 pounds in a week. I got back on the exercise train on Saturday with a really strong 3-mile run. The clouds broke...

Soul Searching

08/28/2009

I went to lunch with a friend yesterday. It was my last day of vacation and it was a nice close to a couple of days off from work.  I’ve gotten over my crazy binge-y days (well, sort of) and for lunch yesterday had a nice Caesar Salad with grilled chicken, dressing on the side. It was yummy and filling. And the whole way home, I wanted ice cream. Cold, creamy and sweet. I got home and had a bottle of water, thinking maybe that was just thirst. But about 15 minutes later, I went for the ice cream… (in a controlled fashion this time, light ice cream, 1/2 cup.) But I wanted that sweet. And I realized, I always need want something sweet after a meal. Bear with me as I digress… Last night I was talking with my sister who had gone to a past life regression...

Weight Watchers Relationship Update

08/13/2009

So after much soul searching yesterday and a long conversation with my Weight Watchers online point tracker last night….we cried, we laughed, we reminisced about the good times and tried to figure out where things started going wrong…I decided that, overall, the relationship has been good for me and deserves another chance. Besides, just once, I’d like to get to lifetime member at Weight Watchers. That would be cool. However, I am taking a little vacation. We need some time away from each other to sort out the issues and recommit to the long-term goals. I’ve gotten too caught up in the day-to-day details and it’s making things difficult. So after weighing in this morning— I lost the same .8 pounds I gained last week so I’m back to my weight of two weeks ago— I’m not weighing in again for two weeks. The home scale is going in...
