My Perfect Exercise Week

My Perfect Exercise Week

On my last post, Jeannie asked what I consider to be my perfect exercise weekly routine. That’s a a tough question because every week ends up being a little bit different depending on my schedule. So I’ll share what I try to get done and what I consider the best for me right now. Thing is though, what I consider to be a perfect exercise week now is much different from what I did when I was starting out. When you are starting out, you need to find something that you can do. Something that won’t hurt you. And something that you enjoy. When I started out, I started with walking. I tried to get out thereĀ  3-4 times a week and I started with a mile at a time. Each week, I added a half a mile until I was up to walking two miles. That’s when I...

Trainer Tuesday: 200 Crunches

Trainer Tuesday: 200 Crunches

If someone ever said to me “Get down there and give me 200 crunches!” my reply would probably be “Seriously? I don’t think so.” 200 crunches sounds daunting, doesn’t it? I’ve read articles about celebrities who keep their flat stomachs by doing 200 crunches a day. Not for me, no way. Last night was my night with the Ab Killer. She doesn’t make me do crunches. Surprised? Don’t be. She’s got all kinds of other fun ab exercises to do instead. Most of them involve the medicine ball, which right now makes those ab exercises at least 6 pounds more effective. And there are a lot of them. And a lot of reps of each (although not 200…not all in one exercise anyway). We do sit-ups, V-things, side to side stuff, leg lifts, all kinds of contortions in the name of looking good. On the way home last night...

Trainer Tuesday: I’m All Twitchy

11/10/2009

Even though today is Trainer Tuesday, I have to go back to Sunday for the start of this post. Sunday, I ran 4.5 miles. That’s the farthest I’ve gone to date and I’m closing in on my 5-mile by Thanksgiving target. Sunday was too beautiful a day to not run. I set out to do a 4-mile run but felt strong when I got home so I kept going, just another half mile. I stayed at a manageable pace (about 11.30 minute miles) and never got winded or felt the need to walk. When I stopped, however, my legs felt like jello for a while. And then my right quad started to twitch. Nothing too obnoxious but it lasted most of the day. Yesterday the twitch was gone, until… Monday night’s session with the AB KILLER, as trainer Jen is referred to on this blog. Trust me, she never...

Trainer Tuesday: The Ab Killer

Trainer Tuesday: The Ab Killer

I’ve started working out with a friend/trainer on Monday nights, and I thought having a Trainer Tuesday post to talk about those workouts might be a good feature. While these workouts aren’t directly related to triathlon training, we are doing a lot of core, balance and strength training, which can only help my performance in future races, right? Besides I feel less jiggly after Monday’s training night. Jen, my friend and now personal trainer, will be referred to in the rest of this post and going forward as The Ab Killer. ‘Cause that’s what she does best. She kills my abs. And secretly works in all kinds of other toning exercises in the process. And when we’re concentrating on other toning exercises, like arms, she’s sneaking in ab work. The Ab Killer’s primary tool of torture is that benign-looking medicine ball on the left there. Pretty colors… round and...
