I’d been doing pretty well with my running. We were getting up at the crack of dawn and getting out there, and Sunday I even managed a 5-miler on rolling hills. I hadn’t run 5 miles in a while so I wasn’t sure how this would go, but it ended up being ok. The first two miles were tough, tough, tough, but once we got into a rhythm, the second half of the run seemed easier and I felt good at the finish. On this run, we run out from a beach, through a beautiful neighborhood and end back at the beach. You can’t ask for more than that. The weather up until yesterday has been really cooperative from a running perspective. Cool, but not freezing, and still short sleeves weather. I think though that’s done. Tomorrow, it’s supposed to be rainy and cold. Maybe even snow flurries. Ugh. Not ready for snow flurries or any other form of the white stuff yet. I’m hoping for a relatively snow-free winter this year, but we’ll see how that goes. At any rate, I’m hoping to get out on the road again tomorrow before the rain. And definitely on Sunday. After my [...]

Early in the morning before the sun comes up, before the birds start singing, before the majority of the people I know are out of bed, I’m out there running with Jen. On Tuesdays anyway. It’s our new routine. We started, I want to say five, six weeks ago? I should say I started because she’s been doing this early morning stuff much longer than that. Other than the fact that I’m ready for bed by noon, I’ve really come to enjoy this run time more than any other running that I do. It’s with my friend and we always have lots to talk about. Did I mention I can actually spit out a few words now when I run? That’s an improvement, believe me. Where we run is nice and flat. I go faster (because she’s faster than me and I need to keep up), and it’s dark. At first, the dark freaked me out a little, but now it’s awesome. Sometimes it’s still a super starry night when we are running. Looking up is magical. This morning, there was a bright full moon to guide us. The only tricky part sometimes is avoiding spider webs. You can’t see [...]

It’s been a while, so I’ve got random stuff to write about. While I haven’t been great about posting to the ol’ blog, I have been keeping up with my training. In the past, when I let the blogging slip, it’s usually because I’ve let the workouts and healthy eating slip as well. Not much to write about then. Or maybe that’s when I should be writing the most, and confessing my slip-ups. So I’ll start this post with the confession that the holiday weekend— a four-day weekend for me— was not great healthy food-wise. It was fun food-wise, but the scale and I were not friends by yesterday morning. In this case though, I at least knew the why behind the 4-5 pounds I managed to pack on over the four days. Pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs and all sorts of other yummy things take center stage in our family on a holiday weekend. Did I mention seafood bisque in a bread bowl? Delicious and not so good for you. Yesterday, I was still coming down from the sugar high (it takes me a while to get back on track, but today it should all be good on the food [...]

Actually, it started with a no-good, awful, very bad mood a week ago Friday. And the mood, which I can only imagine had something to do with hormonal imbalances, led me to one of my mother’s recipes a week ago Saturday. We’d found the recipe weeks earlier and tacked it to the refrigerator with the intention of trying it at some point. But when Saturday afternoon rolled around and the no-good, awful, very bad mood had not subsided, I knew I needed some serious comfort food to help fight the battle. Out came the Crisco—yes, you use Crisco in this recipe–the sugar, the cocoa powder, the white flour, the sour milk, more sugar…. and I began assembling and baking what would turn out to be just like my mom’s Whoopie Pies. I have to admit the process at least distracted me from the mood for a while. And then when I tasted that first cake out of the oven (no icing yet), I was immediately transported back to an easier time, when I was maybe 8 years old. Ah, Crisco. I finished up the baking, which by the way made 40 cake halves or 20 complete pies ( if I [...]

I have been running for almost two and a half years now. Slowly. I started with Couch 2 5k and now I can run 5-, 6-mile distances as long as I keep my pace, although 3-4 is still my favorite distance. I’ve been running for more than two years. The thing is, I didn’t start running to become a runner. I started running so I could compete in a triathlon. I have resisted the running along the way. Almost always, I would start out on a run, wishing I was home already, wishing I could walk, feeling the twinges in my knees or hips. Running was a chore with fleeting moments of serenity or accomplishment. Running has been about finishing a run. Being done for the day. During my St. A’s training, in the freezing cold, I had to practice running without headphones, I had to make sure I got out to run at least 3 times a week, I had to push to longer distances, I had to run after being on a bike for 24 miles in the wind. I didn’t always like it, but I did it so I could compete in a triathlon. My run in [...]

This weekend included a BIG brick training, a 24-mile bike ride and 4-mile run at the notoriously windy Hecksher State Park. I’ve been working up to this with shorter bricks for the last month. Early Saturday morning, when we ventured out for training, the wind was tolerable, a first since we started training there. Cold, but not as windy. There was fog still in the park at 6:45, the first time I think I’ve ever been happy to see fog because it meant the winds weren’t whipping the way they usually are on this bike course. Recent advice from my triathlete cousin included not starting out too fast on the run coming off the bike. He need not worry there. Getting off the bike after 24 miles (my longest ride to date) on Saturday, I could barely lift my leg over the seat, much less run or even walk. It took me a minute to get my spine to straighten up. And toes? It’s been so cold, we don’t even know we have those until about a mile into the run. Fast off the bike isn’t something I could do if wanted to, so I’m good there. But, after a [...]

The other day, my daughter sent me a link to this article: How Yoga Changed My Competitive Life Forever. In short, Deborah Dunham (the author), a highly competitive, perfectionist triathlete decided to give yoga a go, only to realize it’s not as easy as it looks. Does it look easy? I didn’t think so. For any one of us attempting something we haven’t done before or don’t do as well as we’d like, it’s a must-read. The take-away for me is that it’s ok to keep trying, even if we don’t do it so perfectly the first time or the 10th time or the 100th time. Being a perfectionist myself, this is a tough lesson to grasp. I started doing Pilates with the daughter a couple of months ago, in addition to my triathlon training. I knew I needed to strengthen my core, and Pilates is all about strengthening the core. I like it but it’s hard, and I still can’t get some of the positions. Take the Seal, for example. This move requires you to hold onto your feet, roll back, clap your feet three times, roll forward without touching the ground, clap feet again, and so on. I [...]

When I run, I like my music. I rely on it to get me through the dips, to drown out the negative voices that tell me to walk all the time and to cover up the sound of my breathing when it gets ragged. The iPod is a tool that makes getting out the door to go running just a little easier. Because as much as I enjoy running once I’m out there doing it (or maybe more accurately when I’m done), getting out the door is still a challenge. It’s much easier to stay cozy on the couch, especially when it’s cold and windy. Unfortunately, USAT doesn’t allow iPods in any leg of a triathlon. So…. if I’m going to have some fun in this race, I have to get used to running without my iPod. Today I did. I went out for my run and left my iPod sitting all lonely on the counter. This isn’t the first time I’ve run without it, but it’s the first time I’ve run without it intentionally. And it’s the first time it’s gone well. I’ve been in races where I can’t use my iPod when I run. It has always made [...]

Sunday was my best workout day yet. And with 6 weeks to go, I’m confident that I’ll be able to cross the finish line at St. Anthony’s on May 1st. I may need a wheel chair to get to the after-party, but I’ll cross the finish line! I started my day with my planned workout, a 6.2-mile run. I walked a .2 warm-up and started running. I didn’t stop running until I’d completed my second loop of my 3.2-mile course, so my total run was 6.2 miles, no walking. The run took me 1:14 minutes, just under a 12-minute mile pace. For me, that pace worked perfectly for that distance. I felt strong until about 5.4 miles and then the legs really didn’t want to work anymore. But there wasn’t much more to go and I knew I had it. It still amazes me how much of running success is played out in our heads rather than the road. I made sure I kept the self-talk really positive and that carried me through. My mantra? If my arms can pull me through the water for an hour, then my legs (which are much bigger) should be able to carry me [...]

I’ve been complaining a lot about the weather, about training indoors, about having trouble staying on track. Today is a different post. Today was an awesome run day! It rained here yesterday, all day. Yay for rain! Not that I love a rainy day, but it’s better than snow. Seriously better than snow. Today, I woke up to sunny skies, above freezing temperatures and streets with shoulders, thanks to the rain yesterday which cleared some of the snow away…finally. I was almost happy to get out of bed and get ready for a run. I say almost because I’m never completely thrilled about getting out of my nice warm bed on a Sunday morning for anything. Today though, I was taking advantage of the temperate weather . Today, I was going to shed the treadmill and run outside! And run I did. 5 miles worth. An hour out in the glorious sun. There was still some ice to be careful of on the road, and a couple of points where I had to move aside so two cars could squeeze by because there is still plenty of snow. And by the end of the run, the warmer temperatures and sun [...]
