Swim, Run, Bike

Swim, Run, Bike

First, I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. For me and my family, there is much to be thankful for. My sister-in-law came through extensive open heart surgery with flying colors. My family is healthy and employed and happy. I have my health and I have a goal. I’m running, swimming and biking (tomorrow) again. I have an Olympic distance triathlon on the calendar. And I have six months to train. There are differences this time from when I started this triathlon thing. I am doing this race with a friend. I am doing this race for a cause. I’m on a team. I have people supporting me. I have people training me. And I am already, in just a couple of sessions, learning so much about myself. I am a slow runner but I’m getting stronger. And I’m determined again to be a better runner. I participated in...

Swimming…. or not

10/04/2010

I did it. I finally got up early enough this morning to get to the pool in the gym. The alarm went off at 5:40 am. I was dressed and out the door at 5:55 am. I was at the gym at 6:10 am. And Every. Lane. Was. Full. There was one lane where I could double up with someone so I was going to take that approach, but when I went to go into the ladies locker room adjacent to the pool, it was closed for repairs. There is another locker room but it’s clear on the other side of the gym. I took it as a sign to go home. I have had issues with this pool since I signed up for the gym two years ago. It’s not a large pool, but I was assured when I plunked down my $44 a month and signed my...

Not Ready To Race

07/06/2010

While my hip feels somewhat better, I am not back in racing form. I’ve been working out, but not getting very far very fast. This past week, I went on three runs. A 2.5-mile run that I finished with some walking, a 3.5-mile run where I got 2.7 miles before packing it in and a 3.2-mile run where I made it only 1.5 miles. Race distance on Sunday is 3.5 miles. With my hip screwed up, I hadn’t been running for almost a month. And it’s going to take me longer than two weeks to get back in racing form I’m realizing now. Add to that it’s been 100 degrees here, which kind of limits training, for me at least. My run yesterday, the 1.5-mile run, was cut short mostly because of the heat– 85 degrees at 8:00 am. I know hard-core runners don’t let the heat stop them,...

Weight Loss Maintenance Is Hard and Other Random Thoughts

06/08/2010

Random thoughts from FatGirl2FitGirl (that’s me of course): •    I think weight loss maintenance is a big old joke. I’ve been on a maintenance plan since, I don’t know, January, even though I have more weight to lose. My body seemed to want to take a break…reaaaally long plateau… so I decided to go with it. I’ve gained 12 pounds. Not exactly maintenance. I know I’m to blame. When you eat more, you gain weight. And when you eat bad stuff, like brownies, you gain weight. I’ve been having trouble finding the balance for maintaining. I’m either going up or I’m going down. This week, I’m back on the going down side because now I have to lose those 12 pounds, plus I’d like to lose the last 15 that I’m hanging on to. At some point, when I hit my goal, and I will hit my goal, what...

Milestone (swim…)

Milestone (swim…)

This morning I hit a milestone in my swim training…literally! I swam 80 laps in my odd-sized gym pool (it’s 23.5 yards instead of 25). That adds up to 1880 yards, actually 120 yards more than required for a mile (1760). I didn’t know the exact number this morning, so I figured I’d add the extra laps to be safe! I’ve known for a while that I would be able to swim this distance, and the problem has for me been more time constraints rather than endurance. So today I dragged my butt out of bed 20 minutes earlier to make sure I’d have enough time. When I got there this morning at 6:02 am, the pool was just the way I like it. Empty. Balmy. And dark. It makes for a very tranquil start to the day. And trust me, it was the only tranquil part of my...

A for Effort?

A for Effort?

I have been really sticking to my workout regimen these past two weeks. After a less than spectacular exercise winter, I’ve gotten back on track, running, swimming, biking, I’m doing it. When I can. Last night I had a biking on the trainer night planned because, well,  it’s been raining here and I might have drowned if I tried doing anything outside. Yes, it rained that hard. 9 inches in two days. All I can say is thank goodness it’s not snow. Back to bike training…. When I got home from work, I really wasn’t in the mood so I thought I would make it my day off and I got in my pj’s. Ten minutes later, however, guilt kicked in, and I changed into workout gear, kicked that bike’s butt for 30 minutes, all while watching out for the kitty, who was intrigued at how my feet were...

Morning Swim…Interrupted

01/28/2010

I joined my gym because they had a pool and I wanted to be a triathlete… which meant I needed to have somewhere to swim. I also joined my gym because it’s really close to my house and it’s a family gym— not all hardbodies and beauty queens. That was important too. The pool, however, is small. Only three lanes. When I started at the gym last year, one of the reasons I ended up shifting to morning workouts was because in the evening, the pool is crowded with kids taking swimming lessons and seniors doing their water aerobics and water walking. Frustrated and unable to ever get a lap lane, I tried the morning. Ahhhh. The pool opens at 6:00. There’s rarely ever even a lifeguard on duty at that time in the morning. The pool and surrounding atmosphere is warm and the lights are off. It’s zen-like...

My Perfect Exercise Week

01/19/2010
My Perfect Exercise Week

On my last post, Jeannie asked what I consider to be my perfect exercise weekly routine. That’s a a tough question because every week ends up being a little bit different depending on my schedule. So I’ll share what I try to get done and what I consider the best for me right now. Thing is though, what I consider to be a perfect exercise week now is much different from what I did when I was starting out. When you are starting out, you need to find something that you can do. Something that won’t hurt you. And something that you enjoy. When I started out, I started with walking. I tried to get out there  3-4 times a week and I started with a mile at a time. Each week, I added a half a mile until I was up to walking two miles. That’s when I...

Ouuuuch…in a good way

01/12/2010

I’ve been sitting at the computer for awhile. Blogging class, chatting with my brother (I’ve added his zazzle store to my sidebar – BarrelX. He’s quite the designer and he focuses on Xtreme sports. Cool stuff.) I wear his stuff all the time. Anyway, as I went to get up from the computer to head back upstairs, OOOWWWWW. You may have noticed I’m sitting down again. After a few weeks of intermittent workouts at best, I have gotten in four very solid exercise days. Core/strength training/Zumba on Saturday, swimming on Sunday, core/strength training with the ab killer Monday night and running Tuesday morning. The Ab Killer was especially energetic Monday night and we worked hard. Even tried out some new stuff on the Pilates bench. I was already sore from the weekend, but the training last night helped stretch that out. I felt good this morning, so I finally...

Things Are Going Swimmingly

Things Are Going Swimmingly

Well not really. I’m still under the microscope with the IRS, but to counteract the stress of this whole audit process, I chose swimming as my exercise of choice last night. And I got a pleasant surprise! My gym has switched the indoor pool over to a salt water filtering system! Yay! Because I didn’t know this at first, when I swallowed water on my first lap, I thought “Hmmm. That’s odd. The water tastes salty.” I crossed my fingers for the next 49 laps (figuratively of course because actually crossing my fingers would have made swimming difficult) that they had switched to a salt water system rather than something being horribly wrong in what was previously a heavily chlorinated pool. There were little kids getting swimming lessons and a lifeguard on duty, so I figured it was unlikely something was horribly wrong with the system. Besides, the water...
