I’m not sure what happened to my motivation. Just a few months ago, I thought nothing of getting up before the sun to go to the gym or out for a run. Just a few months ago, you couldn’t have thrown me off my weight loss plan. Just a few months ago, the highlight of my day was heading out the door for a run or a bike ride. Now, the only thing that gets me to the gym is guilt. I train with the ab killer because, well, secretly?, I’m afraid of her. Nah, not really. And the food thing, let’s not even talk about how I spend most of my days dreaming of chocolate– lots of chocolate. The only thing that keeps from diving in is that if I gain weight back I won’t have any clothes that fit. I gave the old clothes away. Maybe it’s the winter that stole my mojo. All of this cold, dreary, snowy weather. All I really want to do is curl up under a blanket and watch TV. But I know that won’t do. I still feel better when I run, even if it is on the treadmill. And then I [...]

I was in the gym this morning, running on the treadmill. It’s snowing again here. Even with the snow, the gym was pretty crowded. Everyone getting that last workout before New Year’s Eve Revelry, I suppose. I logged 3.5 miles this morning in about 45 minutes. Since my running has been somewhat sporadic over the past couple of weeks, I’ve decided to ease back in with some walking intervals, some jogging intervals and some speedier intervals, and overall, the run felt really good. I’m sure that within a week or so, it will be all running once again with the intervals dedicated to getting faster. But I digress…. Halfway through my run, a woman got on the treadmill next to me. She reminded me of me when I started on my fitness journey. She had some weight to lose and she started off walking slowly. After 15 minutes, she got off the treadmill and moved to the bike, where she also took it slow, but she was making the effort, in my opinion, the right way. After I wrapped up and was getting bundled up to go out into the snow again, I noticed that she looked pained. Maybe the [...]

I went running on Sunday. 3.5 miles. Now, if you follow my blog, you know this isn’t anything crazy spectacular for me. I’ve been running up around 3-4 miles regularly. Or I was. And then I went on hiatus. Actually I went into “too much stuff to do” overdrive and started putting myself last. I didn’t run for two weeks. Not only did I not run, I didn’t do anything, exercise-wise. By Sunday, I was seriously jonesing to move. However, after two weeks of nothing, I was worried that I would have lost all the stamina I’d gained over the past year. In the two weeks that I didn’t do anything, I kept meaning to get to the gym, especially to run. Or to get outside to run. There have been obstacles. Rain, wind, freezing cold. I’m a fair weather girl. Errands, appointments, late nights at work. I forgot how easy it is to put exercise at the bottom of the list. I’m not training for a race right now, so it was easy to put off getting out there to move with so much else to do. And as week one turned into week two, I started to wonder [...]

I did it! This morning, I dragged my butt out of my warm, cozy bed, put on my running gear before opening my eyes, stumbled to the bathroom, grabbed my keys, a water and my gym card and jumped in the car before I could rethink my decision and crawl back into bed. It was dark, I was sleepy but I was also determined. I was getting back into my morning workout routine. With the change in the light outside in the morning and evening, outdoor runs are out of the question except on days off and weekends. Not to mention it’s getting colder. I’ve been meaning to get back to the gym for a couple of weeks now, but it means getting up even earlier, and I’ve been slow to make the shift. But this morning I went. And I got in a good 3.2-mile run on the treadmill. Another adjustment, but that’s ok. I was running. I haven’t been running in about 10 days. There’s been walking and other stuff, just not running. And I missed it. I didn’t realize how much until this morning. It felt good to be moving. It felt good to be sweating. It [...]
