Pit Bulls, Chica Bands and Holiday BBQs

Pit Bulls, Chica Bands and Holiday BBQs

It’s been a while, so I’ve got random stuff to write about. While I haven’t been great about posting to the ol’ blog, I have been keeping up with my training. In the past, when I let the blogging slip, it’s usually because I’ve let the workouts and healthy eating slip as well. Not much to write about then. Or maybe that’s when I should be writing the most, and confessing my slip-ups. So I’ll start this post with the confession that the holiday weekend— a four-day weekend for me— was not great healthy food-wise. It was fun food-wise, but the scale and I were not friends by yesterday morning. In this case though, I at least knew the why behind the 4-5 pounds I managed to pack on over the four days. Pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs and all sorts of other yummy things take center stage in our...

Where Your Feet Can Take You

Where Your Feet Can Take You

I live on Long Island. It’s a big place with lots of beautiful beaches on the South Shore, cliffs on the North Shore, farms out east and, of course, lots of congested suburban neighborhoods. We spend most of our time in the congested neighborhoods. When my kids were small and even still today, one of my favorite pastimes has been to drive to the less congested areas and see what there is to see. And trust me, I thought I’d seen just about everything. Then I started walking and running. It’s amazing what you miss when you are in a car. I’m just sayin’. This weekend, my friend Jen and I went walking in an upscale neighborhood (an understatement). The neighborhood is probably one of the most upscale in central Suffolk County. The couple mile walk up the main road is spectacular. Million-dollar-plus homes with the Long Island Sound...

Who Has Inspired You to Get Fit?

06/15/2010

I’ve been feeling a little like Debbie Downer lately, dealing with some nagging injuries that are just not letting me be at the top of my game. I’ve been frustrated, which just ends up sabotaging any ground I do gain in my quest for fitness. So I decided to take a step back and think about how this all started in the first place, and rev myself back up. What was the trigger that got me started? Who were the people I looked at and said, if they can do this, I can do this? I think after a long time of being unhealthy and unfit, a bunch of things just converged for me that got me on the right path. One I can tell you was  the thought of turning 50. Since I couldn’t escape the number, I could do it feeling good about myself. And I plan...

Sneakers On and Out for a Walk

04/14/2010

Well, it wasn’t a run, but I did make it out for a walk today at least. Two and a half miles, my toe only got twingy a couple of times. Up until yesterday, I couldn’t even put my sneakers on, so I feel like tonight was real progress. It was a beautiful evening and I really needed the fresh air and movement so it felt great. Funny how when you get hurt, or when I got hurt anyway, I got nervous about doing much of anything because I was afraid of rehurting my toe. When I tried to run last week, it was really, really not fun. It’s frustrating not to move, but it’s easier than getting hurt again. And then it just gets easy to get lazy. There have been things I could do this week that didn’t necessarily require sneakers, but I didn’t do them. I...

That Was Me

That Was Me

I was in the gym this morning, running on the treadmill. It’s snowing again here. Even with the snow, the gym was pretty crowded. Everyone getting that last workout before New Year’s Eve Revelry, I suppose. I logged 3.5 miles this morning in about 45 minutes. Since my running has been somewhat sporadic over the past couple of weeks, I’ve decided to ease back in with some walking intervals, some jogging intervals and some speedier intervals, and overall, the run felt really good. I’m sure that within a week or so, it will be all running once again with the intervals dedicated to getting faster. But I digress…. Halfway through my run, a woman got on the treadmill next to me. She reminded me of me when I started on my fitness journey. She had some weight to lose and she started off walking slowly. After 15 minutes, she...

Getting Fit? Which Exercise Is Best?

07/26/2009

In my quest to get fit, I’ve done lots of reading and research. Other people’s struggles. What works for them. The best shoes for my feet for running. The best exercise routine. I read the information and try to take away what I find most important. The stuff that will help me with what I want to do. There seems to be two hard core exercise camps, and then a bunch of us in between. The cardio people (of which I am currently one) and the strength training crew (I aspire to strength training but am not quite there yet). What amazes me are the fanatic fringe in these camps. The cardio people who say you have to do cardio…it’s the only way to lose fat. Nothing else will work. And the strength training folks who say you have to strength train because it builds muscle, which ups your...

The thing about Couch25K…

06/29/2009

When I decided to sign up for a triathlon back in November 2008, I knew I was going to need help with the running. I have never been a runner, never even made it the mile in high school and never had any desire to be a runner. So how does a complete non-runner get started? I was walking, but running is a whole different animal. I went online and did some research and found the Couch25K interval training program on the Cool Running website. It started with minute-long running intervals. “I can do that,” I figured. I can do anything for a minute. I sailed through weeks 1 to 3. Optimally, through this program you can be running a 5K in 9 weeks. I am not optimal. I got really stuck between 3 minute intervals and 5 minute intervals. I just couldn’t make that change. So I stayed...

A Substantial Change

06/24/2009

A short post. Rare for me I know.  That in itself may be a substantial change. I didn’t work out this morning. A planned rest day. However, work is stressing me out big time. All I can think about is going home, putting on my sneakers and going for a walk. I don’t even care if it’s raining. The change? A year ago, I would have eaten my way through the stress, and not with carrots or broccoli. Today, I didn’t even think about food as a way to deal with the stress. I want to  move: walk, run, bike, swim? Something along those lines. Activity instead of food to combat emotions? Unheard of in my past. And a substantial change for the better. I’m joining the Missouri 60 challenge. Read about it here. I’ll be posting my pictures and goals later on this evening. After my walk.

I Joined the Gym

11/17/2008

So I did it. On Monday last week I joined a gym. It was something I was trying to avoid because I’ve never been a gym person, but it’s dark out now and I haven’t been able to get my walking in. And besides, I have a big fitness goal for April that would be almost impossible to meet without a pool. So I joined a gym with a pool. I finally went to the gym for the first time on Saturday (and then again yesterday!). Surprisingly I enjoyed it. I found that it’s easier to run on a treadmill right now than the street (I’m still mostly walking and then running a half lap every half mile or so). And I went swimming. I’ve always been a strong swimmer, having spent my youth at beaches, my teen years as a competitive swimmer and then as a lifeguard through...

I Am Proud Of My Body

10/14/2008

I went walking tonight. 2.5 miles. That’s what I’m up to now. I rarely walk less than that and sometimes I’ll walk 3 miles. I’m doing this after only 10 weeks of walking, starting with a mile at a clip. And I walk 4 to 5 times per week weather and schedule permitting. I must say, I’m awfully proud of my 49-year-old body. I still have a long way to go to get to my goal weight but the fact that my legs and heart and the rest of me can carry me that 2.5 mile stretch and feel good at the end of it? Well, that’s an accomplishment I am proud of. I was athletic when I was young, but I can honestly tell you that the last time I exercised this consistently for this long was some 29, 30 years ago when I was a lifeguard, and...
