Fifty by Fifty

Fifty by Fifty

I’m turning 50 in May. Ouch. Not sure I’m loving that number. Someday I’ll blog about my torn rotator cuff and the doctor telling me I had a 48-year-old shoulder. But I digress… So when I started Weight Watchers in July, I decided that I wanted to be 50 pounds (or more) lighter by my 50th birthday. If I have to get older, I’m going to feel better about myself at 50 than I did at 48 or 49. I lost this kind of weight just before 40 too (65 pounds when  I was 38 to be exact.) Before I gained it all back…I have gained most of it back…I decided it was time to get back on the stick. So that’s my goal. And it feels achievable. I’m down 18.8* pounds as of yesterday. And I’m now walking 3 miles at a clip. Today, I even ran a...

Walking In The Rain

09/29/2008

I enjoy walking outside. I’d never go as far as I do if I was trying to do it on a treadmill. So where I live, it was very rainy this weekend, not great for walking long distances. Yesterday morning when I got ready to go though, the rain had stopped and I thought I could get in at least two miles before it started again. I was wrong. I was probably just about as far away from my house as I could be on a two-mile walk when the rain started, and by the time I was three quarters of the way, it was pouring. I tucked my ipod into my shirt and kept going because there was nothing else I could do. Fortunately for me, I have a good hubby who came looking for me. He picked me up when I had about a quarter of a...

In the Groove…

09/17/2008

For Kate and me, Weight Watchers is working! We aren’t losing crazy amounts of weight but we are losing and it’s starting to show. Kate has lost 10.6 pounds with a pound lost last week and I’m down 14.6 pounds, having dropped .8 of a pound last week. It’s exciting. The benefits? Our clothes are either fitting better or getting looser. Kate said she loves that she no longer has “muffin top” over her jeans, and I bought a pair of jeans a size smaller. At my Ladies Who Launch group meeting last week, the other ladies (who hadn’t seen me in about a month) noticed the difference. It’s nice when other people see the difference. We’re walking 2 miles a day. I’ve had an incredibly stressful week at work and this has been better for me than any drug could be because I’m relieving the stress and doing...

Better Now…Music To Walk To

Better Now…Music To Walk To

I think I mentioned in an earlier post that I’ve started walking with my iPod. It’s added a whole new really fun dimension to my walks and I really look forward to them now. After my walk tomorrow morning, I will have logged 10 miles this week! Before I started this Weight Watchers gig, I don’t think I’d walked 10 miles in 10 months. So I’m really proud of this accomplishment. PROUD MOMENT ALERT! Tonight I worked two hours of overtime, a thunderstorm was brewing when I got home, and I was starving but I still grabbed my daughter and went walking before the storm. It made us walk a little faster…. But I digress. When I walk by myself, which I love, I now take along my iPod and listen to upbeat music that keeps me moving along at a good pace and working up a sweat. My...

My 2-mile triumph

08/30/2008

I just came back from walking. And today I walked 2.1 miles. Six weeks ago I started weight watchers. I’ve lost 12 pounds. Five weeks ago, I started walking again. The purpose of this blog in the first place was to be accountable while I got fit before my 50th birthday. I started and stopped, just like I had started and stopped the walking and eating healthy…so many times. But now, with the help of weight watchers, I feel like I’ve found my zone. And I make sure I go walking. I started walking a mile five weeks ago. Kicked it up to 1.5 miles for a couple of weeks with slightly more mileage at times. I throw on my iPod with rockin music and I walk hard. I wasn’t so sure about the two miles because after 1.5, I feel it. But today, I made it the full...

Broke the 10-pound mark on Weight Watchers – WooHoo!

08/22/2008
Broke the 10-pound mark on Weight Watchers – WooHoo!

My daughter and I had weigh-in tonight for Weight Watchers. Last week, I vowed to kick that .6 gain to the curb and boy did I… the .6 gain and a couple of its cousins. I had a 3.4 pound weight loss this week bringing my total to 11 pounds. My daughter (she’s 22) has lost another 1.4 pounds too, bringing her total to 8.8 pounds. We’re very excited for ourselves and each other. All this, and we’re eating the things we love and really having fun. After weigh-in tonight, Kate had Taco Bell and I had a huge piece of Sicilian pizza. We’re learning that we can still have whatever we want as long as we manage the rest our food intake carefully. I watch all these Jenny Craig and Nutrisystem commercials and while that may work for some, I’m not a huge fan of being tied to...

Keeping the Momentum Going

06/01/2008

While I know I’ve only just begun my “fit” routine, this was a tough week to get anything accomplished. Between rainy mornings (I’ve been walking outside) , a crazy schedule and not sleeping well at night and therefore, not being about to get out of bed in the morning, I only walked 3 times this week.  Now I know this is better than nothing, but it is certainly less than what I’d hoped to accomplish. Plus, the walks just didn’t feel fun. Plus, while I have been adding more fruit and veggies to my diet, I am still eating too much of the wrong things. I’m a stress eater, and there’s been a bit of stress lately. It’s amazing to me too. I feel so good when I’m walking regularly and eating right. You’d think that would be enough to keep going. It’s just so much easier to get...

Stopping the dieting/bingeing cycle

05/25/2008

I’ve given up being a lifelong dieter, which has gotten me nowhere as I currently weigh more than 200 pounds.  I’ve lost the weight and then have gained it back every time and then some. There are some diets that seem to work for a time, like Weight Watchers, but for me, there is always a downfall. I would do well for a few weeks, even a few months, but then WW Brownie A La Mode desserts would start to feel like a reward and I’d eat both in the box instead of just one. Dieting for me has always been a struggle between feeling better about myself and feeling like I was cheating myself out of something I really wanted. Ring Dings never taste as good as when you are on a diet. That’s why this time, I’m not dieting. I’m walking. I’m exercising. I’m looking to be...

My Birthday Promise To Get Fit And Fabulous

05/21/2008

I turned 49 on Sunday (yes for the first time!) And to celebrate my birthday, I took a couple of days off from work to do some soul searching and unwind. The weather Saturday morning was spectacular, so I went for a walk. And then I went again on Sunday, and Monday and today. And I had energy and got more done and I was just so proud of myself. Right now, I’m the fat girl. My family hates when I say that but with at least 50 pounds to lose, it’s justified. And I’m ok with that. I don’t hate my body and I certainly don’t feel 49 most of the time. But I sit at a desk all day, and then I’m a crafter by night, either sitting at the computer more or sitting at my craft table. And my butt? Well that is just starting to...
